Did you know that Google+ Twitter and Tumblr are selling access to your data?

A couple of weeks ago I became aware that a site called compute.info were showing my photos and Google+ posts on their site. I like to keep a close eye on my copyrighted content so I was most unhappy. I complained about this on the Google+ forum and got the suggestion I could set my filters to private to stop this but that would negate the reason I am on social media, to promote my food blogs.

As the story unfolded I was surprised to find out that Compute.info has bought access to my data from Google+. Worse still I discovered that Compute.info seems to have a similar licensing agreement with Twitter and Tumblr.

Even as the Cambridge Analytica scandal continues to unfold the people have yet to fully get their heads around the issue of their data. We all in one way or another give Google and other search engines permission to make money advertising around our content but that is very different to selling access to it without our permission. To put it another way.......
Would you allow Google to borrow your car without asking so they could make more money? The arrogance of this proposition to me is breathtaking.

Often I spend far too much of my time defending my intellectual property from rogue sites who think that all photos on the internet are free to use, but I don't expect to find out that Google, Twitter and Tumblr treat our content as if it was theirs. Without the millions of blogs, online magazines and newspapers what would draw people to the internet, to get exposed and bombarded by the Ads that Google and Facebook sell? #google #googleplus #twitter #tumblr #computeinfo #copyrightbreach #dishonesty #arrogance #dataaccess #needtolegislate #congress #parliament
