Very nice! Thinking of my previous collegue +Bosse Andersson envisioning this when we learned about Wikidata.

We published qLabel today, an Open Source JavaScript library that let's anyone create (specific types of) content in more than 300 languages. It uses plenty of Web standards, Semantic Web technologies, Wikidata, Freebase, and all that jazz. Have fun and let me know when you use it!

When we launched schema.org almost 3 years ago, our main focus was on providing vocabularies for describing entities --- people, places, movies, restaurants, ...  But the Web is not just about static descriptions of entities...

Yes, it's a pitty that we got closed gardens of linked data / semantic webs. At the same time it makes it even more important to use ensure we have more entities with open URIs in DBpedia, Wikidata etc.

Bing introduces its entity-aware "Knowledge Widget"

Following on the heels of it's Satori entity expansion, Bing today announced its "Knowledge Widget" - a JavaScript-based widget that extracts entities, links them in the page's text, and displays an accompanying carousel of extracted entities.

Here's the announcement:
http://binged.it/1pV2VUS

And the instructions on how to set up a widget:
http://www.bing.com/widget/knowledge

The setup is remarkably straightforward.  Selected whether or not yo want entity images, entity links, both (the default) and you're off to the races.

You can also select whether you want the entity image carousel expanded, collapsed or in auto mode.

The call-out photo shows my own efforts at using the widget, which has the carousel set to "expanded" but otherwise uses the default.  The actual screenshot shows what happens when a user clicks on one of the auto-linked entities - here "Queen Adelaide".

You can see the code here:
http://www.airshock.com/examples/bing/

The text in question is the first chunk of Lytton Strachey's 1921 classic Queen Victoria.  You can see that Bing does a highly credible job of extracting and linking entities.  Color me impressed!

Yet again Bing has proven here it's ability not only to compete with Google's Knowledge Graph, but to innovate in its own right.

And I think this widget is highly innovative, and yet very obvious - obvious as in the Knowledge Graph team may well be asking themselves this morning  "why didn't I think of that?" :)

Whether it's Bing or Google, I see the ability to populate a page with an info box for a specific entity not far behind.

This on a day of announcements from Bing about products that compete with Google..  Almost in passing they also introduce app linking in this announcement.  And Cortona is clearly Bing's answer to Google now:

Very nice. Would be great to make open, linked data a core component of this open innovation effort. Checkout this video that explains the utility of Linked Data and how its being used by the UK's Ordnance Survey http://youtu.be/8qBEkW1wmEM

Awesome! Great opportunity to create entities on the semantic web for e.g. locations of a company worldwide such as http://www.astrazeneca.com/About-Us/Worldwide-locations cc: +AstraZeneca

+Denny Vrandečić has built qLabel; an open source JavaScript library that looks up and displays the labels of entities marked-up in a Web site in the language of the user viewing it. Every entity is marked up with a URI, which is then used to look up the labels in the requested language. You can use any URI that supports look-up using Linked Data standards, in particular +Freebase and Wikidata but you can also publish your own set of entities and labels as RDF or JSON-LD and use them — and at the same time release them to the Semantic Web!

"The linked data and information architecture communities have much to discuss"

Indeed!  An outstanding presentation from +Michael Atherton just delivered at the 2014 IA Summit in San Diego.

Obviously information architecture is squarely within the province of SEO, and so publishing in accordance with linked open data principles is squarely within the province of semantic SEO (and you may have seen some of the examples Mike uses - like the BBC use of linked open data, or data.nytimes.com - discussed here before).

Great stuff.
