Organic Rankings Up - Search Traffic Down?
It could be low click through due to lame titles, but there's an elephant in the room which nobody talks about.

Google's Adwords ads and other non-organic results now take up about 19% of the search results space. So even if you rank number 1 organically, there will still be some paid results above you. This is a problem if your customers are the type to click on the first thing they see without really reading it. It is also a problem on most mobile devices like iPhones when the search results show three ads and ZERO organic results unless the viewer scrolls down.

You can beat your competitors in organic search, but your top keyword positon can't displace Google's own ads (and news, and the answers box).
That's why it is best to have a well-rounded search marketing strategy that includes both: the best possible optimization for organic search, and a well planned Adwords campaign: http://kercommunications.com/seo/seo-vs-ppc/
First, there were 10 results, then sometimes 7, and now as few as 4. In the past year, Google has changed the page-1 landscape entirely, and we barely noticed.

If you want to rank number one, strive for being the best
That seems simple enough, right? "Optimize" does mean to make something the best it can be, after all.

There can only be one number one
+Neil Patel puts it this way:  "Only one piece of content can rank first for each search query—that’s a fact. Google (and other search engines) work hard to make sure that the first result is truly the best content for that keyword.
...in all honesty, does your content deserve to be #1?
It probably doesn’t."

On Page SEO Standards and Best Practices: Question Everything
Are the "usual" on page SEO factors really as important as everyone thinks? Keyword usage in titles & URLs, keyword location in title, H1 headings, alt tags, keyword usage on the page are all widely accepted as the standard things that are essential to good optimization. But are they really, or is it that we've all been doing those things for a long time without checking whether or not they are still as important as they once were.
Much of what SEOs do is based on theory, but those theories should have supporting facts and should be retested frequently. We've been testing some things, and it may be time to throw away that old SEO checklist…

It’s time to stop doing keyword research
…or at least stop doing it the way that too many SEOs “do keyword research.”

"Old-school keyword research produces long lists of words and phrases — with their relative search traffic figures — that can dramatically improve nothing about an SEO strategy."

"It’s time to change the way we think about it. Start decoding what your audience is really looking for, and win them over by providing better answers than anyone else."

Really, the time to stop doing traditional keyword research was probably a couple of years ago.

Googlebot cannot access CSS and JS files messages - did GoDaddy change your robots.txt file?

Yesterday, a vast number of webmasters received a message from Google saying, "Googlebot cannot access CSS and JS files on __.
Googlebot cannot access your JavaScript and/or CSS files because of restrictions in your robots.txt file."

This was a little puzzling since we received this message for sites which have definitely had their robots.txt files adjusted so that this exact thing would not happen. Google started flagging uncrawlable javascript and CSS quite a while ago, so we made sure everything people can see, Google can see.

After some investigation, it appears that sites using GoDaddy for managed wordpress hosting had their robots.txt files reset to a default on or around July 24th. Give GoDaddy's support an earful - they should NOT be altering YOUR files without your permission.
Other non-GD and non-Wordpress sites were warned as well, but most of the warnings we have seen are GoDaddy hosted Wordpress sites.

Note: Some external files, like those from social sharing buttons, may also be flagged by Fetch as Googlebot as being blocked. You won't be able to do anything about those.

Quick Fix
Your site may have different needs, but for most Wordpress sites, the errors come from CSS and JS files added by plugins and themes.
Adding the following to your robots.txt file should fix it, but be sure to use Fetch as Google in Webmaster Tools (Search Console).

User-agent: Googlebot
Allow: /wp-content/plugins/
Allow: /wp-content/themes/

Domain Name Search Engine Registration Email Scams
They start with an official looking subject line like "Important Domain Service Notice" and contain scary warnings like "Failure to complete your Domain name search engine registration by the expiration date may result in cancellation of this offer making it difficult for your customers to locate you on the web."

This is yet another attempt to prey upon unsuspecting site owners. Google's +John Mueller says to ignore it, you don't need it.

Why "Good Unique Content" Is Not Good Enough

Outstanding! Had Ker do an audit when our old SEO agency got us in trouble. I should have done that sooner. I learned that our $10K website had so much wrong with it from the start and our $6K a month SEO company NEVER got the results we got from just the first consultation with Ker Communications. Now we have hired Ker for all of our marketing and website needs and I am so glad they've got our back.

A refreshing source of no nonsense guidance and really creative ideas. This search engine and social stuff can be a little overwhelming. Nick has a talent for using common sense to clear up the confusion about SEO that comes from just about everywhere else you look.

I can totally recommend Ker Communications if you are looking for no nonsense SEO. I had hired two other SEO companies before this and was skeptical. A colleague recommended I talk to Ker Communications. I spoke with Nick for about an hour and learned more about the website in the first call than I ever learned from the predecessors. It took a few weeks to clean up and really optimize the site, and we worked together to develop really good content and a strategy to get found in organic search and social media. After the 4th month, the number of visitors more than tripled, and we have the online sales numbers to match! Still going strong and growing, even after those Penguins ate some of our competitors.

I hired Ker Communications to make a marketing documentary and now we do weekly web video show too. The videos, promotions and work done on our website and search engine optimization have brought many viewers to my site and lots of people into my restaurant. He finds a way to make things work better and I highly recommend.
