Help us name our foals!

We have 3 young foals in our new KHP Mounted Police Young Horse Training Academy that need official names.  You can help by going to this link - http://www.kyhorsepark.com/about-us/khp-mounted-police/khp-mounted-police-young-horse-training-academy - and suggesting a name for each of our new “recruits” that will grow up to be mounted police horses for the Kentucky Horse Park Mounted Police.

We have given you some background and personality information on each little guy to help you come up with a name.  Suggestions will be taken through Sunday, July 12, then we will share our three favorite names for each foal for public vote. Thank you for your suggestions!

Here is a sweet letter we received from a visitor, donating her allowance to help our horses... and also Skittles! While peppermints are a favorite treat for some of our horses we are not so sure about the chewiness of Skittles. We'll be sure to send the donation to the Kentucky Horse Park Foundation. Thanks so much for your generosity and thinking of the horses at the park!

The great Thoroughbred racehorse Lexington died on this date in 1875. Originally named Darley, he was foaled near Lexington, Kentucky, on March 17, 1850.  He won six of his seven race starts, but was best known as the most successful sire of the second half of the nineteenth century, including producing a stallion named Preakness.

According to Wikipedia, he died at Woodburn Stud in Spring Station, Kentucky, and was buried in a casket, however, his owner donated the horse's bones to the U.S. National Museum (later the Smithsonian Institution) in 1878. For many years, Lexington’s bones were exhibited in the Osteology Hall of the National Museum of Natural History, but in 1999, Lexington was made part of the exhibition "On Time", at the National Museum of American History, “where he helped illustrate the history of the first mass-produced stopwatch that split time into fractions of seconds—which was supposedly developed to document Lexington's feats on the race course.”

Lexington’s skeleton came home to Lexington, Kentucky, when he was loaned to the park’s International Museum of the Horse, a Smithsonian Affiliate, in time for the FEI World Equestrian Games in 2010.  Come see the bones of this iconic racehorse and learn more about his story and how he is almost solely credited as making Lexington, Kentucky, known as the Thoroughbred Capital of the World! http://imh.org/collections/natural-history/lexington

The new KHP Mounted Police foals were featured in this morning’s discussion on “Horses in the Morning,” including the park’s own Capt. Lisa Rakes, from the KHP Mounted Police, and Mindy Welch, from the KHP Education Department.  Give it a listen to learn more about the foals and the park’s mounted police program. Our thanks to Jennifer Hebert and “Horses in the Morning” for a great interview!
