My reaction to the work of Terrence Deacon called Incomplete Nature based on Speical Systems Theory. http://kp0.me/1d9gNZo

Deacon's work provides interesting foundations for Special Systems Theory by rethinking some basic ideas in Physics like information, entropy, thermodynamics and other concepts key to understanding life, and consciousness and the social and how there is a necessary gap between normal science and what is needed for these special topics that seem to violate normal physical science. Also of importance in this regard is Robert Rosen's Life Itself which makes room for Biology in Physical Science though noting that complex entailment structures leave room for Life.

This anti-OO programming post is worth reading. Glad to see that some are starting to realize that OO has its place, but is not everything that a programmer needs to know to write good programs.

I would like to point out that the real problem is that people do not think hard enough about the whole problem of programming design because they are too busy programming, to really think through the nature of programming. Recently I wrote an article for CSER2013 called "Hacking the Essence of Software" where I try to think this through a bit deeper using the ideas from a little known American Philosopher called CS Peirce. See http://blog.onticity.net/ more precisely http://kp0.me/W8sHGg. A long time ago I wrote a paper on Realtime Software Design in which I tried to use Mathematical Order to understand the possible views from which we can see the design of a real-time software program. This appears in my electronic book Wild Software Meta-systems See [http://bit.ly/jjgJON]. It is clear from this analysis that there are four fundamental views of Software for   real-time systems which are AGENT, FUNCTION, DATA, EVENT. Minimal methods which are the techniques that we see in UML are in fact the bridges between these viewpoints. And an important bridge is that between Function and Data. We can see that bridge either by looking from function to data, i.e. as Functional Flow or Functional Programming, or we can see it from the point of view of Data looking at Function as Objects. The revolution in Software of Object Oriented Programming is merely a paradigm change where we shift from looking at data from the point of view of function, to looking at functions from the point of view of data. That is all, both need Functions and Data married together somehow in our programming. Long ago Vacav Rajlich showed that functional flow diagrams were merely the inverse of object oriented design representations. What one reveals the other hides and vice versa. But what happened is that Object Oriented enthusiasts, not to say the Zealots, decided to ban the functional perspective from UML, and thus there was an asymmetry because you could not represent functional relations in UML. Now SysML has addressed that by adding this back in as a Legitimate representation that Systems Engineers need to model the whole system at a high level. But designers and programmars have always know that some tasks are just not worth the overhead of object oriented constructs and now we have languages with just interface constructs that allow you to group functionality without making an object, so called traits. What we need is some balance in our viewpoints on computing structures, and now the pendulum is starting to swinging back toward functional views with Functional Programming languages like Scala. Of course within such languages you can create objects if they are appropriate, but it is also seen that purely functional ways of looking at computing structures also have their value. What I have always advocated is attempting to understand the problem at the design level using appropriate minimal methods such as state machines, dataflows, objects, etc as tools to express the designs above the syntactic specificity, delocalization and decoherence that appears naturally in programing languages. We really need to get beyond the Programming Language, or Orientation (Object/Functional) wars and understand the relation between design representations and programming language representations and how they complement each other.

My message is that we need a bit more theory to inform our programming practices that recognizes a diversity of approaches and styes rather than thinking one paradigm or approach solves all problems. And I would like to point out the Falcon programming language that allows different programming styles within the same language as being what I think the future of programming languages should be like. See www.falconpl.org/ See also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falcon_(programming_language)

"An iterative approach is necessary, but alone,it is not sufficient."

Well put.

IMNHO, we do not have a definitive prescriptive for software development and are not likely to get one. To the extent that prescriptives can be put in place, programmers already have a tendency to automate and subsume them.

I expect that we will soon (a few decades) be writing expert systems that will automate much of what people currently do as part of the job of programming. However, like science, engineering and thoughtful pursuits generally, much of software development is a research exercise.

Meantime, though, we do have a vast array of reasonable 'rules of thumb' and however muddled it all is, we do have processes that result in usable software.

Literate programmers should know a lot of theory and have a lot of practice in the black art of software development. As in other disciplines, as practitioners climb higher up the mountain and see more of the landscape, they become ever more aware of their limitations and how little they know of the vast area they see and the likely vaster area they can't even see yet.

I wrote the document mentioned in the comment above so that I would have a formal definition of process that could actually be followed. My main concern, as a working programmer, is to deliver working software into production. It is a little hilarious and a little sad that in the exposition of how you should do things properly all the examples directly cut corners and violate their own rules.

Here, in my opinion, is code worthy of release that is realistically less than perfect. It is real working code actually derived from one of my own larger systems.

http://base64.sourceforge.net/b64.c

One of its design goals is 'to survive'. It has done that admirably well:

https://www.google.ca/search?q=cd64+%22rstuvwxyz%22+%22ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVW%24%24%24%24%24%24XYZ%22+%22abcdefghijklmnopq%22

The above is an empirically reasonable example of its type, but it is hardly a template for building Google's back end or a banking system. Different goals and constraints need different rules and techniques.

There is no substitute for the sound judgment of a seasoned development team.
