Google's decision to turn its security guards into full-fledged Googlers is a bit jarring to our acceptance of the two-tier society around us.

Also keep in mind that security services deal with potentially sensitive information about operations and incidents. Could just be good strategy anyway. Will be interesting to see if this propagates to data center technicians, which AFAIK G usually uses contractors for.

This is super-cool. Keyless SSL lets edge devices terminate secure connections (think security appliances, CDNs, etc) without having to have the private keys of their customers. Huge step forward for the public cloud.
CloudFlare is an engineering-driven company. This is a story we're proud of because it embodies the essence of who we are: when faced with a problem, we found a novel solution. Technical details to follow but, until then, welcome to the no hardware world.

"AWS adds enough capacity every day to power the entirety of Amazon.com when was it was a $7 billion business". Well, shit.
Summary: Amazon Web Services VP and Distinguished Engineer James Hamilton explained during a session at the AWS re:Invent conference how the cloud provider keeps costs as low as possible and innovation as high as possible. It’s all about being the master of your infrastructure.

This one weird comic will explain everything that's wrong with news sites.

OK. +Randall Munroe is fucking brilliant.

Also, the Internet makes me lose faith in humanity.

I think Stephen Colbert summed it up best as: 'Due process' just means that you make a process and then do it.

This is so cool: a digital calculator made from dominoes! Also a great lesson on how circuits and signals work. I'd say this is a great way to teach kids, but I'm an adult and thought it was awesome, so let's just say it's a great way to teach. Awesome job!

In which Mark Shuttleworth continues to be awesome at life.
Occasionally we make mistakes. When we do it's appropriate to apologise, address them, and take steps to ensure they don't happen again. Last week, someone at Canonical made a mistake in sending the wrong response to a trademark issue out of the range of responses we usually take.

That's really the most interesting part of this latest revelation: the sudden indignation by leaders when it's them personally (instead of just their mere subjects) being spied on.

"Note how leaders such as Chancellor Angela Merkel reacted with basic indifference when it was revealed months ago that the NSA was bulk-spying on all German citizens, but suddenly found her indignation only when it turned out that she personally was also targeted."

"I'd love to know what ways, specifically, General Alexander has in mind for empowering the US government to 'come up with a way of stopping' the journalism on this story. Whatever ways those might be, they are deeply hostile to the US constitution – obviously. What kind of person wants the government to forcibly shut down reporting by the press?"

#NSA
With General Alexander calling for NSA reporting to be halted, US and UK credibility as guardians of press freedom is crushed

Feeling too predictable? Don't play this game: you have no idea just how predictable you are. My attempts at randomly selecting between 1 and 0 were <40% unpredictable in the long-run.

(You choose between 1 and 0. The computer tries to guess which one you'll pick. It's right far more often than not.)
How to Play: Man moves by selecting 'Zero' or 'One.' Press '0' or '1' on your keyboard; If you have a 'numbers pad,' enable 'Num Lock.' Or click the buttons if you prefer. The goal is to confuse Machine by 'being random.' Machine moves by guessing 'Zero' or 'One,' before learning Man's move.
