The last words of a dying neurosurgeon:

"Everyone succumbs to finitude. I suspect I am not the only one who reaches this pluperfect state. Most ambitions are either achieved or abandoned; either way, they belong to the past. The future, instead of the ladder toward the goals of life, flattens out into a perpetual present. Money, status, all the vanities the preacher of Ecclesiastes described, hold so little interest: a chasing after wind, indeed."

The web is ephemeral, but institutions like the Internet Archive are preserving its every state. This article from +The New Yorker details efforts and features even I wasn't aware of.

It was an honor to join the cast of the Retro Computing Roundtable podcast for their latest episode, wherein we reflected on tech luminaries we lost in 2014, the reboot of +zojoi's Shadowgate, the Albert Brooks/Meryl Steep movie Defending Your Life —and much, much, more!
Panelists: Carrington Vanston (hosting), Ken Gagne, Paul Hagstrom, Michael Mulhern, and Jack Nutti...

Wow! Compared to past years, I went to the movies a lot in 2014.
Not since college have I gone to the movies as often as I did in 2014! Here are my picks for the year's best films.

2015 has a ton of sci-fi coming up. It's actually looking pretty great!

I had front-row seats to the +The Doubleclicks' performance at Comicazi in Somerville! It was everything I hoped it would be.

As a student and teacher, child and adult, I've been to the Boston Museum of Science many times. My earliest memory of it is Leonard Nimoy. #LLAP

If you're not concerned about storage, bandwidth, or possibly copyright, this +WordPress  plugin can make a personalized Wayback Machine of the external links relevant to your site.
Ever seen a news story from a few years back — or maybe even just a few weeks back — and gotten frustrated when an old link doesn't work any more? It's a problem for anyone who publishes on the web, but particularly for news organizations — both because that network of links is an important p…

Between May 1, 2004, and Dec 31, 2014, I downloaded 941 free songs from Apple's iTunes Store. Now this weekly offering is no more.
The free song of the week promotion Apple offered through the iTunes Store for years went from a big badge to a small text link, and now is gone completely. Searching for free songs doesn't turn up anything, either, and comments in Apple's own forums claim Free on iTunes-at least for music-has officially come to an end.

Introduction
I am a writer, editor, and social media strategist on the subjects of IT, electronic entertainment, and human interest. I primarily write for Computerworld about Apple, content management systems, and retrocomputing. Whenever possible, I explore in writing, podcasting, and event management my personal interests in the Apple II, multiple sclerosis, and genre films and literature. And apparently, I like lists.

Great service and prices — but once you are in their customer database, they will NEVER, EVER leave you alone. No matter how many times you call or email, leave messages or speak with humans, explaining that you have moved out of the area and are unable to be their customer any longer, they will regularly call you asking if your vehicle needs service. One representative even told me they don't have a mechanism for removing customers. I eventually had them update my profile with bogus information, just to leave me alone.

As a vegetarian, I didn't realize Café Gratitude goes one step further by offering fully vegan selections. I was delighted to be able to order anything off the menu, something I can rarely do anywhere else. The mawkish dish names ("I Am Transformed", "I Am Inspired") were not very descriptive — but it was more than made up for when the server placed my dish in front of me, looked me in the eye, and said, "You are Extraordinary." :-) The restaurant has a pleasant layout and atmosphere, and our server, Leslie, one of the café's original staff, was attentive and friendly.

Two friends and I visited this pub on a Saturday night. We had a GREAT time, with a pirate band that came to our table to make sure we got a taste of their offerings. Dancers, wenches, and more provided entertainment the likes of which we wouldn't find anywhere else. Add some generous serving sizes, and we went home happy!
