After reading this article, I spent 10 minutes in the shower studying the ingredients label of my 2-in-1 shampoo+conditioner. This is fascinating stuff. Ever wonder how shampoos which remove oils and conditioners that add oils back can possible be combined into one bottle? The answer is some pretty amazing chemistry.

Researchers at Northeastern found a brilliant way of killing persister cells in bacterial biofilms. Because persisters are dormant, they are very resistant to antibiotics, which usually target active processes in cells. Instead of trying to shut down one of these processes, researchers administered a drug that activates and corrupts a protease in the bacteria. Their drug, when co-administered with a traditional antibiotic, was able to completely wipe out bacteria in biofilms and in deep-seated infections in mice that couldn't be cleared by last line of defense antibiotics like vancomycin. This new approach represents a fundamentally different way of thinking about how to target drug-resistant pathogens and has a lot of promise for the future.

"PNAS | Testicular volume is inversely correlated with nurturing-related brain activity in human fathers" http://feedly.com/k/16XDLPp

A recent article in the Proceeds of the National Academy of Sciences indicates that the bigger testicles a man has, the less likely he is to nurture his children. Now we may all have to find a new way to complement our male friends on extraordinary feats of strength and/or courage.

I was printing out an envelope today to send the IRS my tax payment for the quarter. I was pretty amused by Microsoft Office's auto-correct suggestion.

Interesting implications about what we value most in musical performances.
In a study by Harvard graduate Chia-Jung Tsay, nearly all participants — including highly trained musicians — were better able to identify the winners of classical music competitions by watching silent video clips than by listening to audio recordings. http://hvrd.me/14xH7Ef
