A quick and easy way to deal with those countless, tiny little 'jobs' that crop up over the course of the day. The ones we waste a disproportionate amount of time and energy on.
You need to book a time to see your accountant. Should you do it now, or later? You notice the light bulb in the toilet is blown. Should you change it now, or later? The photocopier is out of paper. Should you refill it now, or later? You take your dirty coffee cup into the kitchen. Should you wash it now, or later? You pay a bill and make a note on that print out that it's been paid. Should you file it now, or later? There are countless of these litt...

Routines are boring, right?Monotonous, restrictive, inflexible, creatively stifling. I've heard all these words from routine-averse folk. They assure me they love the freedom of taking each day as it comes. And you know what, if it's working out for them, then all great. More power to them. But, for the most part, what I see in these people is frustration. They're not achieving their business goals and they can't quite figure out why. I know why.A ...

When was the last time you got away from your desk for lunch?
When was the last time you had lunch away from your desk? If you're like most people I know, you're struggling to remember. Most of us are mindlessly eating our lunch, (if we're having lunch at all), with one hand while the other taps away at our keyboard. We do this despite knowing that:Sitting at a desk all day without a break is bad for our bodies. Staring at a screen all day without a break is bad for our brains. Skipping lunch entirely sets ...

A bit of a different way of dealing with guilt - what do you think?!
I've written countless articles reminding people that if they’re not taking care of themselves as a priority, then they’re no good to the people around them.

I think we’ve all heard that famous Jim Rohn quote “You’re the average of the five people you spend most of your time with.”And while I don’t really agree with it in a literal fashion (I mean, come on, the five people I spend the most time with are the four people in my house – including a three- and seven-year-old; plus a toss-up for number five), the sentiment is sound. We are profoundly influenced by the mindset of the people we spend the most ...

Someone asked me the other day for advice about ‘getting themselves out there’ a bit more. They asked me what I’d done to be ‘seen’ as much as I am.At first – I didn’t know what they were talking about (mainly because we don’t see ourselves the way other people do). They clarified:I’d managed to get some great press about my latest book including write-ups in Forbes and The Herald Sun.I had an article around a topic in the book published on Mamam...

Do you love meetings? Here's how to make them more productive. Do you hate meetings? Here's how to do less of them :)
There are two types of people in this world - those who love meeting and those who loathe them. I really don't think there is any middle ground here. I am firmly in the 'loathe' category because I value productivity and efficiency and there is nothing that kills these two things quite like meetings. Want some numbers of that?A 2013 report by Atlassian estimated that US businesses were wasting $37 billion a year on pointless meetings and stated th...

Can you find 10 minutes a day to market your business? If so, I have 25 ideas for things you can do here
You've got a list, right? One that contains all the big ideas you have for getting your business out there; spreading the word. Once you get on top of your workload you intend to set aside a whole day to action one of those ideas. The only problem is - that day never comes. Or, if it does come, it's only because your phone's stopped ringing. When work dries up, that's a very bad time to start marketing your business. That's why I'm a big fan of th...

Simple shortcuts to business success #4: Get up earlier (as opposed to early)

I’m sure you’ve read those articles sharing the morning habits of successful people and it seems they all get up at 5am each day and do heaps of useful stuff before the rest of the world emerges from their beds.

But I’m not here today to tell you it’s time to start setting the alarm for 5am. No, I’m here to make the distinction between getting up early, and getting up earlier than you have to.

Balance. It's a word I find comes up a lot in conversation ... but I wince when I say it because I know that striving for 'balance' is a bit of a fool's game.
