Collection: African American Newspapers Publication: THE NATIONAL ERA Date: February 1, 1855 Title: SLAVE CASE. CAMBRIDGE, O., Jan. 12, 1855. To the Editor of The National Era: Enclosed I send you an account of a recent “Slave Case,” which occurred at this place. Having seen no notice of it in your paper, I clipped the enclosed account from the Guernsey Jeffersonian, thinking that you had not, perhaps, heard of it. Yours truly, E. SMITH. D...

Excellent overview of the ACA, the SCOTUS decision, and its future implications.
Corrections welcome... John Ellwood: Welcome everybody, welcome to our session on the Supreme Court ruling on the Affordable Care Act, or if you don’t like that "ObamaCare"… Brad DeLong: RomneyCare! John Ellwood: We are fair and balanced here at Berkeley. Last and first, this session is sponsored by the Goldman School of Public Policy, which is footing the bill, and I thank my gracious dean; by the Robert Wood Johnson Post-Doctoral Program in...

"High-fee-paying out-of-state students will come and pay high fees only if they can reliably get the courses and majors that they want and have them taught well."

I had (mostly) believed the latter criterion was fulfilled at Berkeley, but sadly, fulfilling the former criterion might mean the end of what made it such an outstanding institution...
Bob Jacobsen, Academic Senate Chair- Berkeley Div: Dear Colleagues, The process for selecting Chancellor Birgeneau's successor is moving forward… the selection committee has been (mostly) formed…. The more central part is five faculty members, plus President Yudof and Regent Chair Lansing serving ex-officio… Fiona Doyle… Marjorie Shapiro… Donald McQuade… Robert Powell… Judith Stepan-Norris…. These five plus additional members [1] form the entir...

That more than half of the 42% of executives, managers, or supervisors in nonfinancial businesses (>21%) are in closely-held businesses seems to support the argument to be in a small growth company rather than a big public one...
Here is an interesting paper that answers the question. Some highlights from Table 3 about the top 0.1 percent: 18 percent are financial professionals. 42 percent are executives, managers, or supervisors in nonfinancial businesses. More than half of those are in closely-held (presumably small) businesses. 7 percent are lawyers. 6 percent are in medicine. 3 percent are in arts, media, or sports. Less than 1 percent are professors or scientists. :(

Yes, I am not a happy camper this morning...
This morning a lot of people are not happy campers: I confess that last August I thought that Ms. Market had overreacted: that the political costs to being the people on whose watch the Euro had crashed were so great that the administrators of Europe would take steps to make sure that it did not happen on their watch. I thought that Germany would guarantee a facility which would then borrow at 2.5% and buy peripheral eurobonds yielding 5%, and th...

David Frum: Americans for Insurrection: In National Review Online before New Year's, Kevin Williamson explained that the Second Amendment guarantees the right of individual Americans to launch an insurrection against governments they believe tyrannical. There is no legitimate exception to the Second Amendment for military-style weapons, because military-style weapons are precisely what the Second Amendment guarantees our right to keep and bear...

I guess to be fair, you sort of need to blame the party that's forced more cloture motions than any Congress in history.

And this is why anyone watching Fox News comes away knowing less, but also poorer.
As the gold market tumbles, time to recall: even if the price of gold had remained high forever, people who trusted in Glenn Beck would still have been cruelly cheated. I’m trying to recall a worse case of media ethics malpractice than Glenn Beck and Goldline, but thus far I draw a blank. (Source)

guydoingreviews: Amazon.com: guydoingreviews' review of Defense Technology 56895 MK-9 Stream, 1.3%...: I was also present at the UC Davis test trials with Lt. Pike. Those student's were hosed down and didn't budge. I'm not sure how long this thing is supposed to take, but those miscreats didn't move. I heard some of them may have gotten sick latter but I expect my OC spray to work instantly. None of this 10 min crap. What happens if they were ar...

Personally not a big fan of Mediterranean food, but this place was surprisingly pleasant. Had their lamb salad and the meat was done well. The salad itself was also fresh and combined well with their peaches. Their elderflower drink was sweet and left a nice flavor in the mouth.

Had their "Message in a Bottle" at the bar along with their gampas dish. The cocktail was an interesting experience and the dish was delicious, but not sure if the price was justified.

One of my mandatory stops whenever I am in London. The visit in itself is an experience. Love their tea tins and I always re-purpose them to hold random trinkets afterwards.

Fabulous service reminiscent of formal hall in college. One of my favorite paintings is also in their Coffee Room; absolutely magnificent.
