HDR Photography for the Realist

A lot of the HDR photography I've seen reminds me of kitschy, Thomas Kinkade-like paintings. But, HDR's really just a technique, like ferrocyaniding in highlights on conventional silver halide prints. Whatever makes a truly better image is fair game. There are photographers out there who use HDR in such a way that the technique doesn't call attention to itself.
H.D.R. photography has gotten a bad rap for it's ability to make photos look surreal, but used subtly, it can even out lighting in difficult shots. The expert Harold Davis explains how.
