XDS Query Use Cases
XDS is ten years old this year.  It's sometimes hard to believe that something I worked on that long ago is still around (even though there are other things that have been around longer).  Today I had the need to recall some of the use cases for XDS Query t...

Security vulnerabilities in C-CDA Display using CDA.xsl
Today, Josh Mandel posted a security report about CDA.xsl which is an example Stylesheet used by HL7 to illustrate how to generate HTML from a CDA document.  The example XSLT has several security holes which can be taken advantage of by an attacker when a s...

I will note that the HL7 Security WG has offered a Security Handbook to the HL7 Workgroups. This ultimately proposes the security assessment of the standard, with a way to inform the reader of security risks that the next level of design should consider. In this case, even if the basic stylesheet was not hardened, the developer could have been made aware of the need. This security risk assessment handbook has been generally rejected by HL7 leadership and workgroups.

I'm in India this week.  Before I came I needed to get a couple of immunizations, so I called my Doctor's office and spoke with the receptionist, who told me they'd have to get with someone and have them get back to me.  Given that I had to make these trave...

An HL7 Specification for Addressing Meaningful Use Driven Ballots
I'm proposing today that HL7 take a new approach to addressing the volume of ballots that have been generated recently in response to Meaningful Use initiatives.  In true HL7 expert form, I've put this forth as an HL7 Model, which you can see below.  This m...

The Atomic Optimization Problem
A decade and more ago I worked on XML software instead of Healthcare standards.  One of the projects I watched fail but didn't work on suffered from a major optimization failure.  Overall, the system design seemed OK, but it had one big problem. The fundame...
