I lived about 2-3 hours away from there on the coast for awhile. Bend was our snow destination during those couple years.

Happy Birthday to my amazing wife, +Libby Chang!
We just couldn't wait to celebrate with an early birthday trip to Portland last weekend. Although the weather didn't hold up for very long, we found comfort in our great friends (and great food!). We even tried a bit of ice skating - a rare treat for these Floridian-turned-Californians! #happybirthday

REI chooses principles over profits by closing for Black Friday

"Instead of reporting to work, we're paying our employees to do what we love most - be outside."

REI is setting a great example for other retailers and for us all.  This Thanksgiving, consider enjoying the great outdoors with friends and loved ones, rather than wandering the shopping malls.  I know I will.

Maker Project of the Day - Solder:Time Watch Kit

I picked up this Solder:Time Watch Kit project at Maker Faire, and will proudly solder it up this weekend.

Making is a valuable life skill.  It requires creativity, resourcefulness, and a genuine desire to learn.  Although Makers are sometimes misunderstood by those around them, the Maker community is large and vibrant.

Thank you to those who have stood with fellow Maker Ahmed Mohamed, even as those around him failed to appreciate his achievements.  #IStandWithAhmed

FIRST LOOK AT THE FOSSIL Q DREAMER

I’ve been wearing the Fossil Q Dreamer for a few days.  This is first activity tracker I’ve worn that does not display notifications independently, but I figured I’d give it a shot.  Here are my initial thoughts.

Pros:
By far, the Q Dreamer is the prettiest activity tracker I’ve tried on.  Since it doesn’t have a screen, I can wear it on either wrist without losing functionality.  If I choose to wear a watch on one wrist, I can continue wearing this on the other.  The  Dreamer is also elegant enough to pass as jewelry, so combining with other accessories is an option.  The battery life is amazing.   Charging from zero to 100% took about thirty minutes.  Two full days later, the battery is still hovering around 80%.

The companion smartphone app is easy to use.  It can connect  with a variety of social media accounts and provide tailored notifications with a quick buzz and subtle LEDs.  You can set the importance of each alert with three LED lights on the side of the Dreamer.   In addition, step count and distance travelled can be tracked.

Cons:
Charging the device is not user friendly.  The Dreamer charges wirelessly atop a ‘charging pillow’.  However, keeping the devices aligned requires Dreamer to be fully clasped around the charger  This is more tedious than it should be.

The edges of the Dreamer are metal and sharp.  Be careful not to bump into objects or people, or else it may leave a scratch.

Although the app is easy to use, there is a feature called Curiosity.  It’s designed to help you think outside of the box, and try things you may not have in the past.  Distance tracking appears to be an issue for Dreamer.  During a 10k walk, I compared the distance measurement to Runkeeper using GPS. Dreamer’s distance fell short of Runkeeper by over one mile.  It’s not clear whether Dreamer will take my stride into account over time.

I have not made a final decision as to whether or not I will use this permanently.  How it wears in the next couple weeks will determine that.  The device has been satisfactory so far, and an updated review will be posted later this month.

The Target itself appeared large and clean, but my one and only experience here was unfortunately poor. I drove over an hour to pick up an item that was confirmed to be price reduced, and arrived at the store to find the item clearly marked with the correct price (on clearance). The discount was over $200 (why I came so far). But when trying to check out, the sales agent (then manager) decided not to sell it. So even though the item was in stock and clearly marked, they would not sell an item I confirmed before driving. They did offer a $20 gift card for my trouble, so I'll give them 2 stars instead of 1. Still an unfortunate situation.

Reasonably convenient location, but often incredibly long wait times. Add I write this, it is standing room only and I have already been waiting 45 minutes. Unfortunately I have encountered similarly unreasonable waits at this location several times over the years. Also, no Gold Member quick pickup. The agents themselves were courteous and patient, but just very understaffed.

The food itself is good, but the wait is often very long and seating is very limited. So plan accordingly. I mostly enjoy watching them make break through the front window, which is conveniently narrated via mic to an outside speaker.

I'm a little surprised to see a Bennigan's again. I thought they had shut down years ago. I've been to this location a couple times with good experiences. One time, they were gracious with me and my party after several members finished a 'Color Me Rad' run and were quite 'colorful'. Would come again.

A little piece of San Francisco history. I've been told this is the original home of fortune cookies in the US. And while I'm not sure I completely believe that, it is neat to watch fortune cookies made fresh. You can take pictures, but they kindly ask that you buy something or pay $0.50 (not unreasonable). The location is very tight, so getting in and out isn't fun. But definitely stop by and pick up a bag next time you're in the area.

I've been here a few times and received good service. I've never seen the shop too crowded, although parking can be a problem at the Rivermark Plaza in general (avoid the after-work rush if you can help it).

In my experience, the service has been good and the location is clean. Of course it's standard McDonald's menu items, but that's to be expected. No problems encountered.
