San Francisco - in The City!  -

This weekend, the Bay Area hosted another fantastic Maker Faire. I know many fellow Local Guides enjoyed it as well. As a fan of both makers and photography, I want to see if we can create an awesome shared album from the event together!

Most of my photos are still on my SLR, so I'll kick this off with with my snapshots. Please feel free to add your own, and I will continue to do the same. Cheers!

Prepare for Maker Faire

The flagship Maker Faire is returning to the Bay Area May 20-22 in San Mateo.  Tickets have just gone on-sale, and it's not too late to request a booth if you have an awesome project to share.  Maker Faire is one of my favorite Bay Area highlights.  Don't miss out!

Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk (Firefly)
Karen Gillian (Doctor Who, Guardians of the Galaxy)

Many, many more...

FIRST LOOK AT THE FOSSIL Q DREAMER

I’ve been wearing the Fossil Q Dreamer for a few days.  This is first activity tracker I’ve worn that does not display notifications independently, but I figured I’d give it a shot.  Here are my initial thoughts.

Pros:
By far, the Q Dreamer is the prettiest activity tracker I’ve tried on.  Since it doesn’t have a screen, I can wear it on either wrist without losing functionality.  If I choose to wear a watch on one wrist, I can continue wearing this on the other.  The  Dreamer is also elegant enough to pass as jewelry, so combining with other accessories is an option.  The battery life is amazing.   Charging from zero to 100% took about thirty minutes.  Two full days later, the battery is still hovering around 80%.

The companion smartphone app is easy to use.  It can connect  with a variety of social media accounts and provide tailored notifications with a quick buzz and subtle LEDs.  You can set the importance of each alert with three LED lights on the side of the Dreamer.   In addition, step count and distance travelled can be tracked.

Cons:
Charging the device is not user friendly.  The Dreamer charges wirelessly atop a ‘charging pillow’.  However, keeping the devices aligned requires Dreamer to be fully clasped around the charger  This is more tedious than it should be.

The edges of the Dreamer are metal and sharp.  Be careful not to bump into objects or people, or else it may leave a scratch.

Although the app is easy to use, there is a feature called Curiosity.  It’s designed to help you think outside of the box, and try things you may not have in the past.  Distance tracking appears to be an issue for Dreamer.  During a 10k walk, I compared the distance measurement to Runkeeper using GPS. Dreamer’s distance fell short of Runkeeper by over one mile.  It’s not clear whether Dreamer will take my stride into account over time.

I have not made a final decision as to whether or not I will use this permanently.  How it wears in the next couple weeks will determine that.  The device has been satisfactory so far, and an updated review will be posted later this month.

They are both happy, healthy, and beautiful beyond words. I am still in awe of this little miracle I get to share in.

Fair point.  But I'd guess Monday morning to early-afternoon should be less crowded.

Happy Birthday to my amazing wife, +Libby Chang!
We just couldn't wait to celebrate with an early birthday trip to Portland last weekend. Although the weather didn't hold up for very long, we found comfort in our great friends (and great food!). We even tried a bit of ice skating - a rare treat for these Floridian-turned-Californians! #happybirthday

REI chooses principles over profits by closing for Black Friday

"Instead of reporting to work, we're paying our employees to do what we love most - be outside."

REI is setting a great example for other retailers and for us all.  This Thanksgiving, consider enjoying the great outdoors with friends and loved ones, rather than wandering the shopping malls.  I know I will.

I'm editing my previously positive review of this Fry's location due to several poor customer service experiences. They make returning items very difficult even if everything is in order, and impossible otherwise. If you're not 100% certain about the item you are buying, I recommend shipping for it elsewhere.

I generally find furniture shopping uncomfortable - but that was before finding Living Spaces this past weekend. My experience here was a breath of fresh air. For starters, the staff don't work on commission so there were none of the typical high-pressure sales tactics. Nevertheless, I was easily able to find sales people to help and all were extremely personable (especially our main rep Caroline). The prices were straightforward, no contradictory 'sales' - what you see is what you get. And the selection was huge! I left my first day with several good selections in mind and gladly returned the next day to get some more. All in all, a great experience!

Very long wait for dishes and there are almost no vegetarian options. The staff is very curt and dismissive. Towards the end of our meal, we placed an order for steamed buns which never arrived. Even after waiting 20 minutes and pointing this out to two servers, the buns never came.

I don't like the typical commission-based sales tactic of frequently checking in on the customer rather than allowing us to simply browse. The price to quality ratio is also lacking in my opinion. Some decent pieces are available if you're willing to search.

Just a heads up that this location is going out if business soon (along with the whole Sports Authority chain). Sales are currently 10-40% off, with most around 10-20%. The selection is still pretty good for now though.
