A Trainee Air Diving Supervisor course was conducted 14th to 18th January at our Singapore office for a team of 10 Russian divers from the company MRS (Marine Rescue Service), 9 men & 1 woman. MRS operate in all regions of Russia & conduct inland & offshore diving operations. It was felt by the company that the group would be able to concentrate better at a location outside of Russia, where there would not be the distractions of work & family. The divers themselves were all extremely happy to get a break from the freezing Russian winter too!

The course was conducted by Head of IMCA Diving Training Department, Alan Rhodes, in English and using some of the divers who spoke good English to translate the more complicated sections. However, an interesting fact came to light that Alan actually studied Russian at school, so was able to utilise some long (thought to be lost) memories of his schoolboy Russian and even gave them a rendition of that Classic Russian song ‘Kalinka’. Don’t give up your day job Alan!

At the end of the course, the divers presented Alan & Darren with Russian Navy Uniforms (see photos). Alan commented that he hadn’t seen a Russian Navy uniform since his British navy days when they used to be watching each other’s ships through binoculars at the height of the Cold War!

Next IMCA Trainee Diving Supervisor course will be 11 - 15 February in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, or 11 - 15 March in Singapore by KBAT's experienced trainer, Alan Rhodes (Head of Diving Training Dept.)
