A comedy is a joke or sketch designed to make people laugh. It can also be a play characterized by its humorous or satirical tone and its depiction of amusing people or incidents, in which the characters ultimately triumph over adversity. The story of Jesus’ triumph over death is dramatic and well articulated in the Holy Bible. It is a sad story because of the part we played but Jesus triumph in the end. This is a story packed with irony and intrigue and I can just see the glint in Jesus eyes - What divine comedy.

“Jesus wept; Voltaire smiled. From that divine tear and from that human smile is derived the grace of present civilization.”

- Victor Hugo

So this leads inevitably to the divine comedy by Dante Alighieri ( which consists of three parts: Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso. It represents, allegorically, the soul’s journey towards God. If only we knew what God has done for us! If only! That hunter God, that keeps the predators away!

“Ah me! Asiri ikoko, aja ko ni o tu
Ewure ile o mo yi ode, Aguntan ile o mo yi ode
Eni jo’ogun ewu omo yi agbada n la
Me: Guilty? Why my conscience: So clear”

from poem “Guilty as Charged” from Lamentations - a collection of poetry (

All these talk of comedy reminds me of a great comedian who always put a smile on my face whilst I was growing up. His name is Moses Olaiya ( famoulsy known as Lamidi Baba Sala and he turned 80 recently on the 18th of May ( Whilst it has been a life filled with many laughs, there has been tribulations along the way but Baba Sala laughs through these pains. As King Sunny Ade will sing: “Let them say…” (

“Ori mi maje’n si won waye lason….
Aye le ma shata….Let them say….
Won le ma pegan (fi won sile)....Let them say…
Won le ma soso kuso (won so ko gbo)....Let them say…
Ma jo bi olo kun a bu yaya (
Owo omo ni mo bere
Emi gigun alafia lo tele…”

So it is time to dance and drink some palm wine to drown our sorrows (Maajo - King Sunny Ade -

Oro to wo ma da sa ye
Afaimo ka pa owo leka…
Oko tele iyawo re ile ale, ni to ri a ti je
Oko meto, Oko me ye
Airise lo p’oko ninu…
Pagidari Igi ti da

Whilst we are dancing, it is apt to remember a classic comedy from the stable of Baba Sala entitle “Ode Apaerin” - Hunter of Elephant! It is so funny and sad in equal measures but pay special attentions to the versatility of the Yoruba poetry and prose:
(Ode to regbe o..ti o meran bo…)
(Ede oyinbo so ro gbo…)
(Yi yo lo yo…)
(Lamidi to ri amala bawon gb’oku re Oyo…)

Happy birthday Mr Olaiya. Enjoy….

“Simplicity, patience, compassion.
These three are your greatest treasures.
Simple in actions and thoughts, you return to the source of being.
Patient with both friends and enemies,
you accord with the way things are.
Compassionate toward yourself,
you reconcile all beings in the world.”
