As I've traveled around talking about THE ART OF RISK over the past few months, I’m often asked how what I’ve learned about risk-taking has changed my life.  After all, that was the point, right?  When I started this book, I wanted to learn how to make the most of risk—and make smarter, more informed risks in order to reach my goals.  And it has changed my life, in some really positive ways.

But what has been more exciting is hearing how THE ART OF RISK has changed your lives.  I’ve been astonished by the number of people who have reached out to tell me how they are taking the leap, in all kinds of unexpected ways.  I’ve heard from people who have summoned the courage to ask to take lead on an amazing project at work or finally asked for a raise.  Some have signed up for tap lessons or aerial yoga classes.  Others have enrolled in cooking school or a prestigious graduate school program.  One woman told me she’s finally stopped talking about and actually booked that trip to Positano, Italy, she’s always wanted to take. (Send me a postcard, ‘kay?).  And there have been many others who have shared that they are finding joy and success with new jobs, new relationships, and new experiences.  It’s been incredibly inspiring.

So, I ask you:  now that you’ve read THE ART OF RISK, what smart, seasoned risk could you take that would bring you closer to your long-term goals, whatever they may be?

Why not take that risk this summer?  I challenge you to do so—and join myself and National Geographic Books for a #SummerOfRisk.  Show us how smart risk-taking is changing your life by sharing how you are taking the leap.  Here’s all you have to do to show your support:

1.  Take a selfie of yourself – showing us what risk you intend to take between now and July 18, 2016.  (As I’ve learned, accountability is important—it’s hard to back away from a risk you’ve said you’d make publicly!).  Or, share a photo of a friend who is inspiring you with his or her smart risk of choice.
2.  Share it on social media and tag it with your location and #SummerOfRisk.
3.  Bonus points if you find a way to include your copy of THE ART OF RISK in the photo!

By just posting a simple selfie before July 18, 2016, you can share with others that we’re all risk-takers, no matter who we are or what we do—and we all have the power within ourselves to make positive changes by taking smart, thoughtful risks.  Our favorite inspiring posts will be shared on the National Geographic Books Facebook page and five lucky participants will be chosen to win a Summer Reads book prize pack from National Geographic!

Now time to put my money where my mouth is.

Here’s my selfie.  That’s me, starting work on a fiction project.  I’ve always wanted to try my hand at a novel.  But, for one reason or another, I’ve always managed to talk myself out of it.  But this is my Summer of Risk—and I’m not taking no for an answer this time.

Show the world that the life you want is only a few risks away during this #SummerOfRisk.  I can’t wait to see what you come up with!
