+Greg Vargas and I have really been enjoying playing Neptune's Pride II Triton the last 36 hours or so! I'm already addicted enough that I paid for a premium account and am starting another game already. (I hope I don't hate it in 2 weeks...)

NP2 is a real-time strategy game, where real time is much closer real than many other RTS games: it takes hours or days for your ships to move between planets.

+Owen Macindoe described it to us this way:
"It's a 4x game in the vein of Master of Orion, where you're forging a space empire through exploring the galaxy, colonizing planets, building your infrastructure and technology, and waging war against other players. The twist is that it's a web-based game played in real time, but very slowly. A game apparently takes about a month or two to play out and requires about 5 mins of attention a day." (Greg and I think it probably takes more like 10-30 mins a day.)

Here's a rockpapershotgun play-diary about it, also via Owen:

+Max Goldman just told me about OS X's Network Link Conditioner, which is a way of simulating a crappy connection when testing your stuff. I think a lot of us tend to forget what it feels like to use a normal internet connection (especially here at MIT).

I haven't installed it yet, but you can check out more information about it here: http://mattgemmell.com/2011/07/25/network-link-conditioner-in-lion/

I feel dumb cross posting, but I posted this on Twitter and it really belongs here.

online learning at #io13. I'm sick of people treating low completion rate of online classes as a problem. …Instead, we need a metric that reflects how well your experience matches your goals. People don't always WANT/NEED to finish online classes.

Great session, though! Raised interesting questions.
