Yayness, finally figured a way to get around the annoying #Google+ bug (it forces your Drive account as your default G+ account whenever you try to share something).

Anyway, I've been literally using #AvastFreeAntivirus for about ten years, with smaller stints with other software, but it's the best for me, works without a hitch and has kept my computers safe all these years. <3
I installed Avast Free Antivirus for Windows and it’s great. Goodbye paid-for antivirus! Download now to stay safe.

Helsinki got a generous THIRTEEN HOURS of sun in November, three of which were graciously spread over the last two weeks.

Three hours of sun. In two weeks. So don't wonder if you felt a little melancholy last month - it wasn't your fault.

Emme tykkää. Päättynyt marraskuu oli Helsingissä harmain sitten vuoden 2000, kertoo HS:Aurinko paistoi koko marraskuun aikana Helsingissä vain 13 tuntia, selviää ilmatieteenlaitoksen Kumpulan-mittauspisteen tuloksista. Helsinki-Vantaan lentoaseman mittauspisteellä aurinko paistoi vieläkin vähemmän, vain 12,5 tuntia.

Aiya... I know the feeling, though. Things haven't been much better here in New England, and then there's also the freaking snow to put up with as well... >_<

*laughing like a hyena* I finished reading the trilogy (yes, the entire thing, and yes, it can and does get WORSE) last Christmas, and I've got to say that I enjoy these videos all too much. Because yes, yes to everything you say. Thanks for sharing (it seems to lessen the pain of all the bad)!

Syksyn A-englannin YO-esseen aihe. Kakka vai kukkanen?

Aineen pituushan on 150-250 sanaa. En oikein osaa kuvitella, mitä fiksua tähän aiheeseen pystyy sillä sanamäärällä vastaamaan, mutta toisaalta tekstin muoto lienee vapaampi tehtävänannon perusteella.

Dear Desperate! I can so relate to what you’re saying! But, I’m a girl. And believe it or not, I can’t understand guys. Why don’t they talk about anything??? And what is this guy bonding thing?

Wait, what?! If I read that correctly, I gather that L'Oréal basically restricted what questions journalism students could and could not ask during the interview, and then where the answers to the questions could be published - even to the extent of restricting the use for their thesis?!

"The vote was 105 to 92, with one MP absent."

It still needs to pass in the Grand Committee and the second vote in the parliament, but the former is practically a done deal, the members are something like 14 to 7 with four still unsure, so even if they all voted against, it'd pass. And I don't see why *does a quick calculation* more than six people would suddenly decide that they don't support the bill after all.
The Finnish Parliament has approved a bill allowing same-sex marriage. The vote was 105 to 92, with one MP absent.

Help / Bugs  -

Suspecting a Google+/feedly issue here: when I click the G+ share button, it opens a window but uses a different Google account of mine (account B) that hasn't got a profile and prompts me to create one. This happens in both the slider and the old view.

However, I switched from GReader to feedly with the account that has  a G+ profile (account A), and I checked that I'm still logged in to feedly (and G+) with that account in the browser (newest Firefox). Any idea of what may be causing this discrepancy?

ETA: Somehow related to GDrive(?) as signing out of the only service where I'm signed in with B instead of A (for work reasons) makes feedly sharing prompt me to log in to a Google account and lets me pick A.

Thanks for the advice, but the problem still persists. I logged out of everything, cleared cache & cookies, logged into GDrive first with account B and then into everything else with account A - feedly continues to want to share to G+ with B. :(

Love and Anarchy, the Helsinki International Film Festival held for the 27th time this year, released a truly spectacular trailer/commercial earlier today titled "Mannerheim finds out".

Yes, they modelled it after exactly what you're thinking about. Yes, it was done brilliantly. Watch it. Tell your friends about it. Watch it again.

For those of you not so familiar with the phenomenon, Field Marshal C.G.E. Mannerheim is a highly respected (though also somewhat controversial) military and political figure in Finnish history. Mannerheim was prominently involved in the Finnish Civil War and WWII, and eventually became our 6th president. Some years back, a short animated film came out that depicted him as gay - and wearing a tutu - after which another version had a black Mannerheim. Though attempts have been made, an official, "truer to history" bio-pic has never been filmed.

Mannerheim was controversial because of his dealings with Nazis?

You know, Americans certainly know nothing about the Winter War and Continuation War or even that Stalin invaded Finland (It doesn't fit the general narrative of WWII very well.)

There are a few very good documentaries on these events in English to be found here on YouTube. One is called "Fire and Ice: The Winter War of Finland and Russia."

Introduction
Katri (Kay) dapples in geekery, activism, studying in a university, and photography.

She is predominantly a writer, an information hoarder, a coffee addict, a feminist and childfree, but also a culinary genius (read: mixes together random stuff and most of the time it turns out tasty), a fairly skilled experimental writer (she thinks playing around with typography is fun), a championship cuddler, a Cat Bed of Extraordinary Quality™ (no customer reviews available unless you're a medium; possibly a small will do), a black-belt google-fu practitioner, an endless source of anecdotes, a prolific rambler, and a stationary one-woman stand-up comedy tour.

She doesn't normally use the Oxford comma but thought that these lists were getting too long without it.

A while back, we had a discussion on the blog about the cover art for my princess novels. For the most part, I really like these covers, but

Peeps, if you ever happen to find yourselves in Helsinki and want to visit an interesting, large and lively establishment wherein to procure yourself some second-hand books mainly in languages other than Finnish, head over to Arkadia International Bookshop. They've got a huge selection, reasonable prices, lots of interesting nooks and crannies, a piano, a chapel, a warehouse with dozens of boxes of books you're welcome to rifle through, and a boa! ... Seriously speaking, though, I like what they've done with the system after the move a few years ago; most of the stock is on the shelves but there's also stuff in boxes, easily available for perusal, and organised by genre/category/language. There's a pool table available for a small hourly fee, and also tea and cookies and whatever happens to be there the day you walk in. They hold numerous events at the shop and the owner is quite possibly the friendliest antiquarian in Helsinki. And by the way? I wasn't joking about the boa.
