I have had the good fortune to make a lot of good friends. But there's one friend from my childhood who taught me a lesson in love I've never forgotten.

Well the presents have been opened and we are now full on Christmas cheer. Now we can start making our New Years resolutions. Unless you are a mom, than you might want to do like me and take the "Mom Exemption."
New Years is upon us and soon we will start reading about everyone's resolutions, that is everyone but me. I'm taking the "Mom Exemption".

Before Joe and I had kids church was something we regularly did. We just assumed we would raise our children with a strong religious foundation. But that hasn't been the case.
Having kids with special needs church hasn't always been possible. We're considering going to church this Christmas. It is a day known for miracles.

As the mom of a child with special needs I have learned some invaluable lessons that I want to share with anyone who may look at their child one day and wonder if something could be wrong.

This week I really felt the need to concentrate on what I'm grateful for. So this week the Dishwasher and I are sharing my five reasons why I'm grateful I'm not a turkey.

In a few short days my family will gang up on me for our annual war on Christmas music. I love it, they don't. Here are my reasons why this year I should be able to fa-la-la-la my way to a great holiday season without as much as an eye roll from my peanut gallery.
In just a few short days, a battle’s going to break out in my (mostly) happy home. Every November, my family starts its annual Christmas Music War.

I've already started playing Christmas music. My family gives me strange looks but I don't care. I love it. :)

Lizzy is days away from her 15th birthday. Call me crazy, but because of her significant special needs I didn't expect to deal with the same teenage attitude that I had to deal with her brother three years ago. I can be so dumb!
My daughter is days away from her 15th birthday. Not sure why but I'm surprised with what it's like to deal with a teenage special needs child.

Words have always come easy to me. My parents say I was a very early talker who spoke in full sentences at 18 months. But it wasn't till I became a mother that I really fully found my voice.

Even though I'm all grown up with a family of my own last year my parents made a true believer in Santa Claus and the magic of the Christmas.
I might be a grown woman with a husband, mortgage, and three kids of her own, but last year my parents made me a true believer in Santa Claus .

When Joe and I were expecting Tom 18 years ago we made the decision to use the "three gift rule" for Christmas. Believe it our not, we have continued this tradition and for us, it's helped make our holiday less stressful and more joyful!
When we decided on the three gift rule I envisioned a Christmas day where my kids and I got to actually enjoy each other and the gifts that were given.

As hard as it is for me to believe it was almost 18 years ago that I met a boy and my life changed forever!
Ten days past my due date and after a 23-hour labor that ended in an emergency C-section under general anesthesia, I met a boy.

A few weeks ago I started getting notes home from Lizzy's special needs school reminding me to please send in this years parent intake form. This form is usually the bane of my existence since it requires me to admit in writing how significant my daughters special needs are. Now I won't lie and say it was a joy to fill out, but this year was different. And I have our "village" to thank for that!

Yes, my dishwasher is really possessed!
Introduction

I am a mom to three, wife to one and the owner of a possessed appliance who still finds it hard to believe that the woman who didn’t even have an email address till the fall of 2010, is now a full fledged blogger, social media addict and published author. This all came about after years of doctors, teachers and friends encouraging me to write about our life with three children who have a variety of learning differences, including our daughter who has extensive special needs. The Dishwasher has been running here since January of 2011. In the Spring of 2012, I co-founded the online magazine Bonbon Break and then happily returned to my beloved Dishwasher full time in July of 2013. My work has been featured in BlogHer and Mamapedia among other publications. I am also honored to have essays in the anthologies, Sunshine After the Storm and The HerStories Project. Have a question? Please feel free to contact me at, kathyradigan@hotmail.com, I look forward to hearing from you!
