When I became a mother my own mom would frequently remind me to be careful what I said around my kids. One day I learned the hard way she was right.

So thrilled to be up on Seleni Institute today.
Learning how to be a parent of a child with special needs is a gradual process with progress and regression at every turn. One woman tells her story about raising her daughter, Lizzy.

I have always done my best to shield Tom and Peter from some of the darker realities of Lizzy's issues. But this weekend I realized that might have been a mistake.
As the mom of a daughter with special needs I've always tried to shield our two sons from some of the darker realities of Lizzy’s issues. But at what price?

When I had Lizzy I knew I was all grown up, but looking back I truly became an adult the day I knew in my heart she had significant special needs.

This week I was reminded of the tough road Joe and I faced in becoming parents and our experience with pregnancy loss. Looking back I'm reminded of the women, sometimes strangers, who helped me through i
My experience with pregnancy loss isn't something I like to think about, but when I do I'm reminded of the women, who helped me through it.

This week the online world was filled with peoples opinions on mom bloggers, and being hot or not. It seems a day doesn't go by without somebody somewhere telling us that our choices in how we live our lives or parent our children is wrong. This week I thought I would weigh in with my thoughts on the subject!
My 50 years on this planet have taught me that I can take what I like out of anything I read, watch, or am told to my face, and leave the rest.

Poor Tom didn't know what he was in for when he agreed to help my dad and me this summer finish the remodel on my house that we started in March.
My dad (and personal handy man) is not happy unless he has a new project. I’m feeling pretty lucky that for the time being, my house is it.

As much as I love my grown up life, complete with my own family, I sometimes find myself longing for the simpler days of my 1970’s childhood.

Thursday Peter graduated from elementary school. I am officially done with that chapter in my life. Friday as I waited for his bus for the very last time I went through my own version of the five stages of grief.
Thursday I sat in a room and watched my last baby graduate elementary school. It's now official, my time as a mom to a kid in grade school is over.

My 11 year old told me that he does not like the type of music I enjoy listening to. Which translates to "Mom you are not cool."

Once my whole family is sound asleep I finally have time to be with someone I don't spend much time with these days, myself. Just like my mom before me, I find the midnight hour too compelling to just sleep!
Once everyone is asleep it's my turn to finally get a little peace. Yes I should be sleeping too, but like my mom before me, the midnight hour is my time.

This Friday we got to see our beautiful Lizzy in a play at her school for students with special needs. True, she was only in the chorus, but to us she will always be a star!
My daughter's destined to be a star. I know it. She might have just been in the chorus in her school play, but to us she will always be a star.

Introduction

I am a mom to three, wife to one and the owner of a possessed appliance who still finds it hard to believe that the woman who didn’t even have an email address till the fall of 2010, is now a full fledged blogger, social media addict and published author. This all came about after years of doctors, teachers and friends encouraging me to write about our life with three children who have a variety of learning differences, including our daughter who has extensive special needs. The Dishwasher has been running here since January of 2011. In the Spring of 2012, I co-founded the online magazine Bonbon Break and then happily returned to my beloved Dishwasher full time in July of 2013. My work has been featured in BlogHer and Mamapedia among other publications. I am also honored to have essays in the anthologies, Sunshine After the Storm and The HerStories Project. Have a question? Please feel free to contact me at, kathyradigan@hotmail.com, I look forward to hearing from you!
