How to Create an Emergency Kit

Last May EF4 and EF5 tornadoes stormed through Oklahoma destroying homes and schools in Edmond, Shawnee, Moore, and surrounding areas.  One of those tornadoes came within a fourth of a mile of our home sending my two babies, my husband and myself sprawling for our bicycle helmets, bed mattress, and life essentials only to crowd into a small closet and pray for the best.

Since then we have put in a tornado shelter and have begun the process of preparing for the next emergency, should a tornado indeed come our way again this year.  Need some ideas for creating your own emergency kit?  This is a good place to start.

Keeping the Family in Mind as You Organize

Do you ever try to organize the house but get frustrated because the rest of the family doesn't think the same way you do?  Or that no one else seems to take pride and keeping things picked up like you'd like?

A reader recently shared with me about her frustrations and what she chose to do with them.  By the way, the result looks fantastic!

Ultimate Guide to 5 Star Books for Kindergartners by Reading Level

The last few weeks I’ve been excitedly starting to plan for the next school year.  Why now?  Because I like to plan for the following school year during the final 9 weeks of the current school year so I remember where my girls are and where I want them to go.  Besides that, when I complete my planning by summer I can enjoy the summer break too!

That said, I've been sorting through grade level reading lists and Amazon 5 star books to come up with an Ultimate Guide to Picture Books by Reading Level.  If you have any children in 2nd grade or below then this is one reading list you will definitely want to check out as there are hours and hours of research behind it.  Enjoy!

Kathy Gossen seeks each day to grow into the kind of person God wants her to be and live out her faith in the everyday whether that’s organizing her closets for the twentieth time, preparing homeschool lesson plans for two wiggly worms, cooking for a picky eater (aka her husband), or learning how to become a better blogger.  In the end she just prays that her life song sings of love for her Lord, and she hopes to encourage others along the way in her writings on Cornerstone Confessions.

Kathy also serves as the Executive Director and non-profit founder of Central Oklahoma Homeschool Choirs, a 5-choir choral program providing a quality choral education to nearly 100 area homeschool students ages 5-18.  As ED of COHC, she is also the coordinator of the Oklahoma Homeschool Choral Fest, a solo and ensemble and large group choral event for all Oklahoma homeschool students ages 8-18 led under the direction of a nationally known clinician.
