You can mix up your underwater painting projects by putting a tropical twist to things. I like that this fish has all the usual parts, just in different proportions for a more exotic look. http://artprojectsforkids.org/tropical-fish-preview/

I mixed up the media a bit this week, and gave my students a chance to draw with Crayola Color Sticks on black paper. Drawing a clown face offered lots of creative coloring, without overly detailed facial features. http://artprojectsforkids.org/clown-face/

Kathy, Hi! I have been reading all of your posts and what I really want to
know is* how *you post pictures on Google...I'd love to do that for my
families to see what we are doing in class. If you don't want to type it
out I can call you. Kersten Hughes, former Dixie Chick [?]

Today my after school students painted with acrylics on unstretched canvas, which will become journal covers next week. http://artprojectsforkids.org/mini-circle-painting/

I’ve had hundreds of these old envelopes sitting in my closet for months, but the wait has finally paid off. Just as I was about to go buy paper for my cardboard journal project, I realized these envelopes could be cut and hole punched to make some pretty nifty 2-sided pages. With the 4.5″ x 6″ cardboard covers coming from my school’s recycle bin, and the free envelopes, the only expense is about 25¢ for the book rings. Not bad!

These clay owls were formed around student’s thumbs, which made them easy to hold and safer to fire. This tray was created by first graders, who did a great job. http://artprojectsforkids.org/clay-owls-by-1st-graders/

I experimented with sprouting beans in a CD case, after a parent donated hundreds to my school (sometimes I get the best stuff!). This image was taken after the beans spent 5 days in wet soil and indirect sunlight. http://artprojectsforkids.org/beans-in-a-cd-case-day-5/

I’ve found some of the best art supplies at my local Smart & Final (restaurant supply) store. If you ever need scratcher sticks, be it for scratch art paper or clay projects, etc., try using wooden skewers instead. You can get 500 for $8, versus 25 wooden stylus' for $4.

Are your students studying American symbols? I tried this Bald Eagle drawing out with first graders last week, and they did an amazing job. PDF tutorial available. http://artprojectsforkids.org/portfolio/bald-eagle/

Earth Day is coming up on April 22nd, and being the big doodle fan that I am, I thought having a coloring page with lots of fun shapes to fill in might be useful in more ways than one. This is in the style of my Earth Day Doodle Mural, I hope you enjoy it! http://artprojectsforkids.org/earth-day-coloring-page-2/

My latest Earth Day mural offers a colorful countryside layout, with lots of simple shapes for the younger artist. Each student colors a single page, and when they are all taped together, the mural measures 36″ x 48″. http://artprojectsforkids.org/store-2/
