Photograph of Dale Chihuly's glass sculpture, "Fiori Di Como". Located within the Bellagio casino in Las Vegas. The sculpture is comprised of 2,000 hand-blown glass blossoms that hang like a grand chandelier in Bellagio's lobby.

Very interesting. Balancing the risk of injury vs the risk of psychological problems. Apparently, risk of injury while young helps to avoid crippling phobias when older.

Why do we always find the subtle bugs just before a release?

Looks like I won't be releasing 3.0 today, just because Hugh found this incredibly subtle pathname lookup bug. We have a patch, we understand the problem, and it looks ObviouslyCorrect(tm), but I don't think I want to release 3.0 just a couple of hours after applying it.

Of course, the bug is so hard to see that Hugh needs weeks to reproduce it even with his stress test, so we could just ignore it and backport the fix later. But I really hate making releases with known issues even if it's almost certainly a "nobody will ever hit this in practice" issue.

Oh well.

The systemic refusal to acknowledge that men can be victims of sexual violence is appalling.

FOSS is the present-day Bauhaus

How I learned to stop Architecture and love Free Software ... [The Bauhaus] modernist designs were centered in functionality, simplicity, rationality, and taking art to everybody through mass production. In summary, making our day to day habitats and tools... better, cheaper, simpler and available to all. So through most of my first year I asked myself "Where is the present-day Bauhaus?"

How not to design a CAPTCHA

Unfortunately Sony missed the entire point of a CAPTCHA. Instead of using an obfuscated image which is difficult for computers to recognize the characters, they include the CAPTCHA's unobfuscated characters in HTML and use CSS and JavaScript to make the characters appear slightly distorted.

While taking a Digital Image and Video Processing class (EE 371R at utexas.edu), I picked up a summer hobby of writing CAPTCHA breakers. Most CAPTCHAs can be decoded with a combination of Gaussian edge detection and XOR difference analysis with known characters. However this one falls to a simple regex.

Bought a new cell phone on AmazonWireless. Awesome deal. It would have been $215 total in the store, while it was $88 total on Amazon! I was also able to create a monthly plan a-la-cart and get only the services I wanted. Definitely check it out next time you want to get a new phone.
