The Ubuntu Software Center offers some benefits for newbies, but it's missing some key functionality.

For starters, it's a 'sloth'.  I drop to a terminal prompt and run apt-get.  Fuhgeddaboutit
It is a tad slow, but I never use apt-get. I use the Ubuntu Software Center more than apt-get. I tend to use aptitude quite a lot though. It's really slick.
I use the command line more often than the USC, mostly beacuse the usc was so slow on my comp, until i added another 2gb of ram.
right now its just bearable so ill stick with the command line.
