IAM TEACHING IN ORVIETO, ITALY FALL 2016!!
Fractured Angels Of Italy
Create fresco-like paintings on wood and fabric inspired by the angels
of Italy.
Dates: September 25 - October 1, 2016
Instructor/Leader: Kate Thompson
Cost - $3100
Painting on fabric
I have been drawn to angels ever since I discovered the images of the Angels of Pompeii. Long after its destruction by Vesuvius in 79 A.D. the angels remain. These frescoes of angels painted on the decaying walls of the ancient city have captivated me ever since. I have dreamed of visiting Italy for most of my adult life. It is only now in my autumn years this dream is coming true, allowing me to teach what I love!
Group travel
This workshop will focus on two projects:
In the 1st project, you will create a fresco type painting on a piece of vintage fabric which I supply. Plaster and crack the fabric to create a fresco like foundation. Learn how to paint, image transfer, and collage an angel onto this substrate.
In the 2nd project, you will work on a wood substrate. With a couple layers of joint compound, using stencils, scratching and scraping , you will create an aged and crumbled wall effect. Using copies of your own personal photos of Orvieto, learn how to transfer images. See how to paint a translucent image on top of this which becomes your own Orvieto angel. I will also have copies of photos on hand to use in your pieces if they catch your fancy.
Also included in the workshop are:
Demonstrations of acrylic painting techniques for portrait and figure work.
Demonstrations for creating 'plastered cracked fabric'.
Demonstrations of layering techniques using plaster, stencils, and so much more
During this exceptional week, you will discover the angels of Orvieto to use in creating your own fresco angels. My Fractured Angels are not the heavenly flawless angels. They are flawed, cracked and fractured. ‘There is a crack, there is a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in,’ - lyrics by Leonard Cohen serve as my inspiration.
With camera and sketchbook in hand, you will gather daily inspiration from the beauty and mystery of Orvieto. Learn how to incorporate these images in your artwork by transferring them onto a 'plastered' wood or fabric substrate. The result has the feel of an aged fresco, imparting a sense of ancient grace to your angel.

Meet Kate
My work as a fiber artist working with fabric and fiber to create abstract 3-dimensional forms was my focus for many years. I started painting full time in 2009 focusing on portrait/figure work painting in acrylics, watercolors and mixed media. Fractured Angels is the continuous thread throughout my work. My art parallels my spiritual journey and I identify with the flawed, cracked and fractured human yearning for peace and fulfillment.
The older I get the stronger the pull to explore and express this theme in my work. Along the way I discovered I loved teaching. I find the creative process so incredibly interesting. My energy lies in that process and to share that with others has been the most fulfilling role of my life. The spiritual nature of the creative process is something that I think about a lot. The idea of constant practicing of my craft along with allowing myself to let go in moments of creating is the key to authentic art.
