It's hard fighting our instincts to protect our children from hurt but sometimes they need to be able to take risks to learn just what they are capable of.

"Go away, Mum! I don't Want you!"

It can be heartbreaking hearing these words but what she's really trying to say is "I'm hurting, Mum and I want you to make it better!"

This is a really great way of helping our children when they are having a hard time. Seeing the hurt behind their misbehaviour can help us guide them on a better path with empathy and without punishment.
