"Improving our justice system is a high stakes conversation that everyone has to participate in. If we are going to strengthen our democracy, we have to challenge ourselves, question our biases and preconceptions, and understand by putting ourselves in other people's shoes how they experience life in our society.

We all deserve to live in a society, in a city, in a country, in a world- where every mother and every son, just like every father and every daughter- who live in the same house, also live in the same neighborhood, because the law is being enforced on all people equally. It is only then that we can say and also believe that our government works for all of us, not just for some of us."
- Jamil Jivani

I am proud to serve as a mediator with the San Francisco Office of Citizen Complaints, which provides mediation for complaints- including ones as described in this TEDx.  We would all benefit from more cities supporting programs like the SFPD's OCC Mediation program, which foster dialogue and understanding on all sides in these complex and challenging encounters between law enforcement and the public.

"Loving an addict is really hard. When I looked at the addicts I love, it was always tempting to follow the tough love advice ... But in fact, I learned, that will only deepen their addiction - and you may lose them all together. I came home determined to tie the addicts in my life closer to me than ever - to let them know I love them unconditionally, whether they stop, or whether they can't."
- Johann Hari author of Chasing the Scream
New evidence about addiction isn't just a challenge to us politically. It doesn't just force us to change our minds. It forces us to change our hearts....

For those future builders, a lovey reminder:

"Great writers of speculative literature, such as Bradbury, Kurt Vonnegut, Ursula K. Le Guin, and Isaac Asimov, observe the past as much as the present when they contemplate the future, and ask us to consider not just who we are, but whom we have the potential to be. Their work asks us to pay attention to ourselves and the world around us as a means of avoiding dystopia, a place where we have lost so much of what defines the best of humanity."

"Sometimes we just need to be with others when there are no answers. Someone who has lost a loved one, or losing their own health. A team suffering ten years of dedicated work wiped away by a distant, corporate decision. Sympathy or get well soon cards really don't help. Being a transformational presence is the highest form of our art. There is nothing to be done, so we show up as a wise and thoughtful witness... Not only can't we predict when these states will occur, we have no business thinking about them. We just sit in the exquisite moments when someone confronts their core.”

"I'm dreaming of a society where there is a sense of wonder about the beauty on this planet... My invitation to you until then is to have the courage to go on a journey to find the place... where your deep gladness meets the hunger of the world." - Martin Cadée

What a treat to hear this inspiring story of +Martin Cadée's courageous response to the moment he realized: "I felt like I was playing a role in a theater play that I didn't believe in... "

"There will be no one like us when we are gone, but then there is no one like anyone else, ever. When people die, they cannot be replaced. They leave holes that cannot be filled, for it is the fate — the genetic and neural fate — of every human being to be a unique individual, to find his own path, to live his own life, to die his own death." - Oliver Sachs

Beautiful and inspiring reflection by physician and author, Oliver Sachs. This made me smile: "While I have enjoyed loving relationships and friendships and have no real enmities, I cannot say (nor would anyone who knows me say) that I am a man of mild dispositions. On the contrary, I am a man of vehement disposition, with violent enthusiasms, and extreme immoderation in all my passions."
I am now face to face with dying. But I am not finished with living.

May 2015 be a year in which we express the poetry within, smile at the Flowers we see each day, create delight-filled surprises, stand with those whose voices need to be heard in order for our Light to fully shine, greet fear with courage, talk to strangers (yes, put down the phone & show up in life), touch Our vulnerability with tenderness so that we can meet others in theirs, wonder at the magic of Unexpected moments, nurture the authentic in our relatedness, celebrate our mentors and teachers, Revel in the cosmic dance, play with children, explore accidental Intimacies, Share grace in moments that challenge us, trust in the gifts of each sunrise, inspire Humanness, hone our ability to mind the gap between stimulus & action so that most of all, we choose love- always, choose love. #lovewins

Programs can help with "applications and all the bureaucratic details. But how can we help our students prepare for the tug of war in their souls?"

Thought-provoking article on identity and race by Vijay Iyer:

"To succeed in America is, somehow, to be complicit with the idea of America—which means that at some level you’ve made peace with its rather ugly past.to succeed in America is, somehow, to be complicit with the idea of America—which means that at some level you’ve made peace with its rather ugly past....

I want you to know that, all titles aside, I am first and foremost an artist. As an artist I ask myself Dr. King’s question every day. What am I doing for others? To this end I have pursued three main goals. First, I have strived to generate a consistent, un-ignorable, complicating presence in the landscape of culture. As African American innovators like Paul Robeson, Nina Simone, John Coltrane, and Jimi Hendrix found, in the face of a culture that would deny them, it becomes necessary for an artist of color in the west to defiantly announce to the world: I am a fact....

What I humbly ask of you, and of myself, is that we constantly interrogate our own complicity with excess, that we always remain vigilant to notions of community that might, perhaps against our best intentions, sometimes, embrace a system of domination at the expense of others. Can we radically submit ourselves to the pursuit of equality and justice for all? If we choose to call ourselves Asian American, can we not also choose to be that kind of American that refuses to accept what America has been, and instead help build a better America even for others, who might not immediately seem to “belong” to us?"
