At this time of cash crunch, several migrant workers in India are affected and it looks like at least some of that pain can be alleviated through proper awareness. A majority of the workers do not have a proof of identity and many among them are giving up their jobs assuming they will not be able to establish bank accounts without ID proofs. However, two years ago, RBI relaxed the norms for a bank account and all that is needed to open a limited bank account (called a "small savings account") is a photograph with a signature! (see: https://www.rbi.org.in/images/KYC_Eng.jpg, https://www.sbi.co.in/portal/web/personal-banking/small-account). The bank will then provide them with an ATM-card which serves as a photo ID (see: https://ssup.uidai.gov.in/document-list). In case anyone is in direct touch with someone who is affected by such a wrong assumption, please spread the word!

What would it take to achieve a unique VPA (Virtual Payment Address) for every government kiosk in India by Q1 2017? (where payments are accepted: hospitals, courts, railway stations, buses, petrol bunks etc.) #demonetisation, #UPI, #cashless

With the #demonetisation exercise in India getting close to the end-of-the-year deadline, it looks as though most of the cash has gone through the banking system at least one round-trip. Now, why not anonymize this data and release it to the public? Instead of grappling with the mammoth problem of tax evasion as a lone tax dept., the use of machine learning would get to identifying the anomalies much faster. It would also give more credibility to the whole exercise if the data was in the public domain where anyone can see it as opposed to sitting inside govt offices without much transparency.
