A thought struck me yesterday.

Competition [between companies] arises to exercise differentiation... however, this is exactly what is exhausted once it is established. Therefore, marketing is even more of a lie than it lets on.

I think of a gas station on the corner. A second gas station pops up to compete. Pretty soon, their prices are the same... so in essence it doesn't matter which gas station you go to. At this point, the gas stations turn towards value added services and their marketing. However, both gas stations may eventually provide the same value added services... but perhaps market them differently or at different times. Yet, when it boils down to it, if you walk into one, you can get exactly what you can get in the other for the same price, despite what their branding and advertisements reflect at that given moment.

So competition rises from differentiation, but thrives on sameness?

I just got the invitation to preview the new HTML5 interface. LOVE IT!
