A friend wondered why many are so obsessed with the whole Josh Duggar situation. I replied that it is deeply personal for so many people, but for varied reasons. This includes, but is not limited to: people who have been affected by religion, for the positive or for the negative; people who have ...

People are AWARE of Autism. But do they ACCEPT Autism?

Here's a great article that highlights ways that folks can actually make a difference, since as Shannon writes, "Awareness is passive. Acceptance is a choice."

My son told me that in circle time on Monday, a classmate shared that his father was unable to come to Thanksgiving dinner because he was required to "deal with the protesters." I told my son that Michael Brown will never be at Thanksgiving dinner ever again. #BlackLivesMatter
It has been a shocking and difficult time for the Black community. As a white woman, I can understand privilege from the "I'm not male" perspective, but have not experienced it from the "I'm not white" perspective, because I am white. Still, I have witnessed things that are overtly racist, ...

Californians!

We have an election coming up soon, and  - as always - it is very important that you vote. Here's a video on Prop 46. This is one of those things that "sounds good" until you really learn about what the effects of the proposition would be. I encourage you to watch the video below, and go to http://www.noon46.com/ for more information.

A brand new documentary is coming out about the huge amazing incredible #Batkid day! This independent film is being made by KTF Films, who wanted to tell the behind-the-scenes story of that magical and moving event.

This entire school year has been filled with scratchy throats, upset stomachs, and exhaustion. We've had ER trips for breathing problems, and missed birthday parties. Both my sons have had more school absences than we'd like, and in general we haven't been able to do as much as we'd want because ...

#tbt Fourteen years ago I was living in NYC, pregnant with my first child. At the time, I researched cord blood banking. Well, just a few weeks ago, I found myself back in NYC as a guest of +ViaCord .

The field of newborn cord and tissue preservation and use has of course expanded greatly since this photo was taken back in the autumn of 2000. During my trip a few weeks ago, I was thrilled to learn more about the research that may further expand the utility of newborn stem cells.

Here is some of what I learned: http://www.karianna.us/blog/archives/2014/10/viacord-newborn-cord-blood-and-tissue-preservation.html

“Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day”  was definitely one of my favorite books as a young person. (Another favorite was "Fortunately | Unfortunately" which had the same theme about stuff going wrong... but sometimes right!) I'll be interested to see how it plays as a movie.

In theaters Oct. 10, 2014, Disney’s “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” follows 11-year-old Alexander (Ed Oxenbould) as he experiences the most terrible and horrible day of his young life—and soon learns that he’s not alone when his mom (Jennifer Garner), dad (Steve Carell), brother (Dylan Minnette) and sister (Kerris Dorsey) all find themselves living through their own terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.
