Good read on the vulnerabilities of public scholarship when it collides with social media.

Thanks for posting this Karen. I like the emphasis to this post places on social media literacy for "faculty" as a unit of analysis. I'm curious what +Nancy J. Smyth thinks about this in light of her long standing efforts to increase use of tech amongst her faculty.

A constant topic here in Boston lately. 😀 Money quote: "When officials in Austin, Texas, commissioned researchers to engage the public in social media conversations about proposed public transportation plans, they couldn’t keep up with the 49,400 social media messages received over the two-month trial period." How would you manage and make sense of 49,400 tweets?
Some cities ignore the abuse, but others have found success engaging it head on.

Just read the article.  1). As a Philly resident I was proud of SEPTA's approach to Twitter responses. Seems like one of the few good governmental ideas coming out of this city. 2) Transportation systems could reduce the number of tweets they need to respond to by requiring geolocation for complaints (i.e. we have to know you are on our transportation system in order to respond to your tweet). 3) Install AI software to filter the most important words (e.g. "theft" "missed stop" and "amazing" and "grateful "etc). Float those to the top for review / response.

Money quote: "I have come to the conclusion that Facebook is a lifestyle magazine featuring my friends, who are doing it better than me."
Constantly checking Facebook to see what your friends are doing could lead to some serious depression. A recent study conducted by researchers at Nanyang Technological University, Bradley University and the University of Missouri Columbia found that h...
