Storytelling ideas, story starters, and creative writing prompts.
Let's face it: in this animated, electronic, mini-series world we're in a tough competition for our kids' attention. A child's simple request to "tell me a story" can feel a little daunting as we wonder if what we have to say...

In a messy season of life? Feeling guilty? Embrace the 80/20 rule, mama, and let that guilt go.

#parenting #mothering

Let me knit for you It's my 5 year anniversary at SimpleKids.net and I want to say thank you by knitting you something. I'm going to give one reader a handknit hat of their choice (because I love you guys!)

Have you glanced at the rows and rows of titles in the parenting section in your local bookstore or library lately? Turned on the television to view a panel of experts debating the latest theories on ways to create a “perfect” childhood? Walked down the aisles at the toy store and been ...

The post that is definitely NOT my Mother of the Year Award acceptance speech.
Sometimes in this strange, wonderful phenomenon of sharing called blogging, it can be all too easy to put another person up on a pedestal, to assume they are leading a nearly perfect life because of the snapshot that we see -...

The one where my grace and propensity for carrying far too many things in my hands while going down the stairs finally catches up to me.

Or, how I fell down.

"Elderly cats, looney old women who fall down stairs, sock knitting. Yeah, this is exactly how I pictured my life would turn out. Look out, Teen Spirit because I've seen your future."

Note: there are affiliate links in this post. Thanks for your support! My goal for 2016 is to knit twelve pairs of socks. Pair number one was the Rockstar Rainbow socks, which I finished early January. A few days ago I...

My Geeky Valentines.
I know, I know. Valentine's Day. It's a Hallmark holiday. It's too commercial. It's just another excuse to spend money. I hear you. But I'm not listening. After the year that Christopher and I just survived, all of the ups an...

A crafty connection to my childhood and Kara Creates

Introduction
My name is Kara Fleck and I'm the editor of SimpleKids.net and the blogger behind Rockin' Granola and the homeschool blog The Dynamo Rhino.  I'm a wife and mother of four kids, ages one to eleven.

I’m a believer in childhood and the importance of keeping it as uncomplicated as possible.

In my pre-blogging life I have done everything from designing flyers for local bands (which sounds much cooler than the small-scale venture it actually was), working for my university’s English department as a student secretary, and for a few years I was the assistant manager of a small bookstore.

One of my favorite things about being a parent is getting to play, craft, and create with my children – any excuse to get messy and giggle!
