YAY, less JavaScript alert()s to debug

Android 4.4.3 aka KitKat MR2 is rolling out. In this release the WebView has been updated to Chromium M33, bringing security and stability enhancements, as well as bug fixes.

Additionally, M33 includes:
- DevTools screencast [1] is supported for WebView. Allowing easy capture of screenshots on desktop, and viewing the contents of off-screen WebViews inside Chrome DevTools
- Improved HTML5 Canvas performance with support for hardware-acceleration
- Vibration API [2] (with android.permission.VIBRATE)
- HTML5 form validation [3]
- HTML datalist tag [4]

The default user-agent string for a WebView running on Android 4.4.3 has been updated to incorporate 33.0.0.0 as the version number.

When can I get the dev device!? (Throwing money$$)

We are excited to announce a new project from ATAP, something that we have been working quietly on over the past year.

As we walk through our daily lives, we use visual cues to navigate and understand the world around us. We use our eyes to observe the size and shape of objects and rooms, and we learn their position and layout over time almost effortlessly . This awareness of space and motion is fundamental to the way we interact with our environment and each other.  We are physical beings that live in a 3D world. Yet, our mobile devices assume that physical world ends at the boundaries of the screen.

The goal of Project Tango is to give mobile devices a human-scale understanding of space and motion.

Our team has been working with universities, research labs, and industrial partners spanning nine countries around the world to harvest research from the last decade of work in robotics and computer vision, concentrating that technology into a unique mobile phone.  Now, we’re ready to put early prototypes into the hands of developers that can imagine the possibilities and help pull those ideas into reality.

What if you never found yourself lost in a new building again?  What if directions to a new location didn’t stop at the street address? Imagine playing hide-and-seek in your house with your favorite game character. Imagine competing against a friend for control over physical space with your own miniature army.

We hope you will take this journey with us. We believe it will be one worth traveling.  To find out more, and apply for a development kit visit  http://g.co/ProjectTango.

The future is awesome. Let’s build it together.

-- Johnny Lee, and the ATAP Project Tango team

Now open to everyone, no invitation required

Last week we told you we'd be trying out new ways to find Explorers. Well, we weren’t kidding. We learned a lot when we opened our site a few weeks ago, so we’ve decided to move to a more open beta. We’re still in the Explorer Program while we continue to improve our hardware and software, but starting today anyone in the US can buy the Glass Explorer Edition, as long as we have it on hand: google.com/glass

We’re ready to keep meeting new Explorers, and we can’t wait to hear all your experiences and feedback to continue to make Glass even better, ahead of our wider consumer release.

Awesome, finally no fighting for first come first served tickets and lost opportunity due to Google Wal...ahem...payment server failure. It does not increase chance of getting ticket but at least the buying process will be fair.

Only 126 days until the 7th annual Google I/O, when we come together with amazing developers like you to talk about what's next. On June 25-26, 2014, we’ll be broadcasting live from Moscone West. You can join us in person in San Francisco or remotely, via a live stream and through I/O Extended community events around the world.

More details to come next month, including registration info. In the meantime, you can check out highlights from last year at https://developers.google.com/events/io/

Also, quick note for those who want to join in person: this year we’re making some changes to registration, so you won’t need to scramble the second registration opens. We'll be implementing a new system, where you can submit your interest to attend Google I/O 2014. Successful applicants will then be randomly selected and notified shortly thereafter. We’ll be following up with more details from +GoogleDevelopers, so stay tuned.
Google I/O 2013 brings together thousands of developers for three days of deep technical content focused on building the next generation of web, mobile, and enterprise applications with Google and open web technologies such as Android, Google Chrome, Google APIs, Google Web Toolkit, App Engine, and more.
