"Kansas was once again in the news for its recent introduction to the top ten list of states with outbound population according to the latest United Van Lines survey. Naturally, this is spun as bad news for the state’s administration, which is already facing income shortfalls, even after downward revisions of expectations. It’s also shown as proof that Brownback’s efforts are failing. Which might be true. This news shouldn’t, however, come as a surprise to anyone. The downward population trend was also reflected in recent census data which showed us at a net loss."

"To this point, I haven’t said a whole lot about problems the legislature has been having struggling with our budget. There are a lot of voices in that chorus already anyway, and I don’t have too much to contribute that hasn’t been said. Though, I will say at least a couple things that I do think need said, if only to drive the issues home."

"I have an admission to make. I’m a busy guy. With a full-time job. And a part-time job. And side projects that don’t pay me anything but still require a load of time and attention. Somewhere in all that mix I like to eat, sleep, and at least try to do things that keep me sane. Right now especially, there’s a lot to talk about going on in Kansas, and as much as I want to write about all of it, it’s pretty damn hard to find the time, because I care far more about the quality of my output than the average newspaper or network news show. This isn’t fair to our fans and readers, and I think it’s a brake on something that has the potential to be much better with more voices in the chorus."

"So this topic is a bit broader than just what we’ve gone through here in Kansas, but given our recent history with education, the stuff happening in Texas does have a certain flavor that we know well. What I’m referring to, specifically, is the news that Texas has recently approved the usage of “updated” textbooks. I say “updated,” because of the obvious argument from the detractors that the books are being filled with biased information. And I’ve made no bones about my opinion that we’re already doing plenty to ensure students don’t have the skills necessary for truly powerful higher reasoning."

"By this point, most folks have heard the tale of the waitress who refused a tip from the governor this past week. She took her final day on the job as on opportunity to spoon feed a bit of criticism to Brownback via a tool she had at her disposal. The media has, of course, ran with this as if she’d flung a pie into his face. She’s been the target of praise, and a pretty fair amount of rebuke. Then something caught my eye."

"I could really use a hand in having someone explain to me what Topeka’s fascination is with disrupting education. Not improving it, not experimenting on it, but just straight up disruption. It’s like a cook at McDonald’s that’s discovered truffle oil. We bitch and moan about the Federal Government getting overly involved in state and local affairs, but we forget that our state governments are literally just as bad about it. An outhouse by any other name…"

"I try to be fair. I try to be balanced. I want to be these things. I will make an effort here. That said, sometimes you just have to call out bullshit like you see it, and point it out as the hypocrisy that it is. To this end, I bring you our lord and savior governor, Mr. Sam Brownback. Mr. Brownback, I do not like you. I think you are a shitty leader. I do not hide this, and I am far from ashamed of it. (What I’m getting at here is that this article is going to be pretty ranty, so fair warning.)"

"Not a lot of debate to offer up on this issue. This is a straight-up, you-should-know-about-this type of deal that comes out of Topeka. In a 51-67 vote, the Kansas House rejected an amendment that would require them to be accountable to their voting record by requiring those votes to be recorded for posterity - "Record All Votes." While some votes are recorded, all too frequently the House uses voice votes on issues that allow representatives to hide behind a basic yea/nay count. This would have modified that rule via HR6004."
