#Estonian   #Android #GoogleTranslate #Kõnele

Proovisin üle pika aja Google Translate rakendust Androidile (v3.0.2, Android v4.1), mis on vahepeal kõvasti edasi arenenud. Nüüd on peaaegu võimalik käed-vaba kõnest-kõnesse masintõlge eesti keele ja teiste Google'i poolt toetatud keelte vahel. Tundub, et kõnetuvastuseks oskab rakendus kasutada mitut telefoni paigaldatud tuvastajat. Nt eesti keele jaoks on vajalik paigaldada telefoni Kõnele rakendus, sest Google'i enda tuvastaja eesti keelt ei toeta. Eesti keele kõnesünteesi Google samuti ei toeta ning seda pole kahjuks veel võimalik endal lisada (ja soome oma ei saa vist ka kasutada). Juuresolevatel piltidel on must tekst kõnetuvastatud ning punane tekst masintõlgitud.

In English:
It's been a while since I've tested the Google Translate app for Android. It has improved a lot meanwhile. (Tested with v3.0.2 on Android v4.1.) Now, you can almost do hands-free speech-to-speech translation between Estonian and the Google-supported languages. It seems that the app can use more than one speech recognizer installed onto the device. E.g. for Estonian you need to install Kõnele, because Google's own recognizer does not support Estonian. Google also does not support Estonian text-to-speech but this is also currently not available as a separate app (and one cannot probably use the Finnish text-to-speech either). On the attached screenshots, black text has been speech recognized and red text machine translated.

+Krasimir Angelov Yep, Google did a pretty bad job translating it. In case you're interested in the content, I've updated the post with an English translation generated by a human. ;) The main point is that I found yesterday that Google Translate now uses several speech recognition engines installed on the system, so one really benefits from the openness of Android's speech-to-text infrastructure. It wasn't the case before in Google Translate. I'm not sure if it does the same with text-to-speech. There are many languages that Google's TTS does not support or supports badly (e.g. Romanian, Bulgarian, Estonian), it would be good if one could plug in an alternative TTS engine.

#EstonianAir
Disappointed that Estonian Air has introduced a check-in fee of 10 EUR per person (unless you check in online in advance). (Why do they want to be more like Ryanair?)

Apparently it's been in place since 1st of Aug, but I found out  about it only this morning at the Brussels Airport. (The fee had to be paid at another counter, so the whole procedure involved running around with various sheets of paper and waiting in various lines.)

To be fair, Estonian Air informed me about this new setup ~20h before the flight by email which Gmail classified as "Promotions" so I read it only later. The email is also misleading: "Tasuta saab lennule registreeruda veebis ning lennujaamas check-in automaadis." (i.e. you can check in for free via the check-in machine at the airport), not explicitly mentioning that "Osa lennujaamades (Amsterdam, Brüssel, Vilnius), kus on check-in automaadid, puudub võimalus kasutada neid Estonian Airi lennule registreerumiseks." (i.e. the Brussels' check-in machines do not support Estonian Air). The latter information is available only at http://estonian-air.ee/et/check-in/check-in-tasust/ (which, to be fair, is linked from the email). Finally, one further information source (http://estonian-air.ee/et/check-in/check-in-tasust/check-in-tasu-kkk/) advises that even if you do not have a printer and cannot print out the boarding card, you should still check-in online as in this case the check in counter will print the boarding card out for you.
