The Social Bicycles system uses a battery-powered device on the back that uses NFC (the Clipper Card, for example) to identify the rider, GPS to locate the bike, and is integrated with the yellow lock. I have to wonder how long the battery and thus the GPS will last. (The nearest Social Bikes installation is a corporate campus in San Ramon, but I don't think this is part of that.)
