I'm sure a lot of people have seen this story doing the rounds on Facebook but it deals with a number of issues facing the #education sector, #privacy  and #bullying

This is great technology, Spritz allows you to read really text very quickly. I managed to read 500 words per second. I wonder if it could have other applications such as helping people with reading difficulties?

It sort of confuses me because when I speed read a book I kind of read blocks of words in one go in order to recognise the progress of the sentence (if that makes sense). With Spritz all the words are thrown at me one after the other and so I have no sense of the word patterns to  allow me to predict where the sentence is going.

(However, 500 words a minute too!)

Today I did something I used to do a lot of but haven't done in a while, I sat down and listened to an album. I listen to a lot of music and before life got filled with a thousand other things to do I used to take time out to just sit in front of my speakers with my eyes closed and immerse myself in music.

The album in question was Hesitation Marks by Nine Inch Nails which was released at the end of last year. I bought the CD and digital download directly from their site but the interesting thing is that you can download two different mixes of the music. One version is mixed to be loud, like most rock and pop CDs these days it's the sound that most of us are used to, which means the music sounds roughly the same volume as recordings by other artists. The second mix was really the one that interested me though; labelled as the audiophile mastered version it's more dynamic because it's not been maxed out to sound loud. With a decent sound system it allows you to hear the dynamics of the music (in a nutshell, there is a greater difference between quiet parts of the music and the louder parts). This adds up to an open sounding, detailed and absorbing listening experience that wasn't fatiguing in the least.

Of course NIN may not be your cup of tea but it's great to see that there are artists out there who are interested in releasing a quality product and giving the fans the opportunity to hear something more akin to how it sounded in the studio rather than the "maxed out to compete with everyone else" version.

If you do like NIN (particularly their Pretty Hate Machine album) then why not order Hesitation marks directly from their website, cut out the middle man and be prepared for a great listening experience. http://www.nin.com/ #NIN #NineInchNails

2000 Pis to give away!

In support of “Hour of Code” as part of Computer Science Education week, and in collaboration with Google, we are going to give away up to 2000 Google Raspberry Pis to anyone under the age of 18 in the United Kingdom. To qualify for a free Pi you need to do one of two things. Either:

(1) Get your school to do an “Hour of Code” between now and the end of term and we’ll send a Pi for every participant to your school (up to a maximum of 20), or
(2) Design a “My Pi Project” poster and send it to us here at Pi Towers, and we’ll send you your own Raspberry Pi.
