Keep up with our history of Android. This time, Android makes it big!
In Part 3 of our 8-part series on the origins and evolution of Android, we dive into the first Nexus devices, Android's first embraces of design, and the looming war with Apple. Intro Pre-history Early days Making it big Coming soon Coming soon Coming soon Coming soon Coming soon Momentum had been building behind Android throughout its first year on the market. I was kind of hoping none of us at AC would even say anything about this, but +Alex Dobie had to go have opinions and feelings and shit.

I kinda like it, but I also mostly don't care. I think the folks saying this makes their homescreens look childish are overreacting because they can. I think it's hilarious that some of the loudest detractors post absolutely hideous theme creations with awkward icon packs every day like they've created some sort of masterpiece.

It's a small, trivial thing. Hooray colors.
There's nothing wrong with Google's revamped logo. But the bizarre new technicolor search bar needs to die. When a company like Google (or in recent days Verizon) makes a major branding change, a lot of ink gets spilled. That's what's happened this past week as the new Google, under freshly-minted CEO Sundar Pichai, showed off its new logotype to the world. Flatter, serif-free and...

3 years ago we embarked on a project to put computing inside a contact lens -- an immensely challenging technical problem with an important application to health.  While I am delighted at the progress that project has made, I could not have imagined the potential of the initiative it has grown into -- a life sciences team with the mission to develop new technologies to make healthcare more proactive.  The efforts it has spawned include  a nanodiagnostics platform, a cardiac and activity monitor, and the Baseline Study.

It’s a huge undertaking, and I am delighted to announce that the life sciences team is now ready to graduate from our X lab and become a standalone Alphabet company, with Andy Conrad as CEO.  While the reporting structure will be different, their goal remains the same. They’ll continue to work with other life sciences companies to move new technologies from early stage R&D to clinical testing—and, hopefully—transform the way we detect, prevent, and manage disease.

The team is relatively new but very diverse including software engineers, oncologists, and optics experts.  This is the type of company we hope will thrive as part of Alphabet and I can’t wait to see what they do next.

Like the Galaxy S6 edge but want a bigger screen? Samsung has just the phone for you. When it came time to unveil the Galaxy S6, one of the better-kept secrets was a second model of the phone, the Galaxy S6 edge, which incorporated a curved screen with exclusive software to take advantage of it. A significantly more complete thought than the poorly-received Galaxy Note Edge, the GS6...

I haven't wanted a BlackBerry since middle school but I might be picking one up soon
It turns out BlackBerry can make one hell of an Android phone. A quality mobile experience means different things to different people, but a universal core to those experiences is the ability to enjoy using your phone without it feeling like work, even when you are using it specifically for work. BlackBerry has a long history of making people more productive through mobile...

Oooooo!!! Oooooo!!! I know!!!

One hasn't been announced yet. And the other ... also hasn't been announced yet. So we don't have any idea what's actually different yet, do we.

But don't let that stop the silliness.

I'll probably be using a BlackBerry soon... #wordsIneverthoughtIwouldsay
While the rumors surrounding the BlackBerry 'Venice' slider continue to swirl, the device has now appeared once again in some new, clearer images which are pretty on par with everything we've seen thus far. As mentioned previously, there's still a lot of things up in the air surrounding this device and BlackBerry has yet to announce anything officially but judging from these images, the...

LG has come out with yet another amazing flagship phone which also claims amazing battery life. While a good amount of G4 owners agree with that claim, there are many members in our forums that are constantly unhappy with their phone mainly because they are forced to charge it in the middle of the day. There are dozens of different reasons why someone might not be getting the best...

I think Rachel and I have a room to split. I'll double check and let you know. Wednesday to Saturday I believe.

Also, spirit isn't a bad airline if you're aware of what they charge for and work around it. My roundtrip flight was less than 150.
