Emperor Meiji was instrumental in taking Japan from its feudal past and making it a world power. He tried to show that Japanese culture could work with Western imports. For example, he loved French wine and writing traditional Japanese poetry. It’s unclear if the French wine helped his poetry along. http://wp.me/p6tdUC-2Gj
A visit to the Meiji Shrine in Yoyogi Park proved a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Seven cities with traffic-free cycle routes that are easy to explore on bikes with the whole family. http://wp.me/p6tdUC-3x4
I’m sure you have seen the rental bikes that have cropped up all over the world’s major cities that let you rent a bike for a short term spin around the city. The main downside with these bike hires is that you are not entirely sure if the numbers you need will be at the …

The cute little town of Hudson on the Hudson River north of New York City is small-town America as re-imagined by people from Brooklyn. Lots of cafes, antique stores, galleries and restored architecture - a real gem and a beautiful place to visit. http://wp.me/p6tdUC-2mt

Looking for a family-friendly wine tour in Napa Valley?

Check out this vineyard which is built around a medieval Tuscan castle. The castle consists of parts of European castles shipped and then painstakingly rebuilt in California.

My kids favourite part? The torture chamber. My favourite part? The wine, naturally.

Green Park in London is one of the Royal Parks. It’s famous for having no flowers - hence the name, Green Park. It used to have flower beds when it was part of the back yard of King Charles II. However, he would pick flowers for his mistress du jour on his way out to the assignation. His Queen, Catherine of Braganza, was not impressed and ordered all the flower beds removed.

So what’s so special about Wall Drug? It’s a roadside attraction near Mt Rushmore which became famous for offering weary travellers ice water during the Great Depression. It’s a behemoth of a store that has pretty much taken over the entire town.

People rave about the little town of Wall in South Dakota and the famous Wall Drug Store. So, of course, like lemmings we went to see for ourselves. It was easy enough to do because Wall Drug is conveniently located right off the interstate between Mt Rushmore and the Badlands National Park. A large chunk …

Before the 19th Century, the dead in London were buried in local churchyards (and occasionally just thrown in the nearest ditch!). This lead to unsanitary conditions and a major cholera outbreak lead Parliament to pass rules calling for the dead to be buried outside in the suburbs. These cemeteries came to be called the Magnificent Seven because of their stunning art and architecture.

The Victorian-era Highgate Cemetery in North London has amazing historical architecture as well as the tombs of many famous people, including Karl Marx.

Swarovski Crystal Worlds near Innsbruck is a multi-platform homage to all things Swarovski with a museum and contemporary art showing who its crystals can be used in many different ways.
There’s also a garden, cafe and children’s play areas - making it a nice day outing for the whole family. http://wp.me/p6tdUC-2cT

I’m not entirely sure how to describe Swarovski Crystal Worlds which is located near Innsbruck in Austria. Calling it a museum doesn’t acknowledge that there’s a lot of contemporary art, great dining, modern architecture, gardens and children’s activities. Frankly, although there are some interesting pieces created historically by Swarovski, there isn’t much on the history …
