Of course, it’s not easy to quantify the value of advice, although the research in our last Journal update provides a reliable indication. Every product, person and objective is different. The value of financial advice comes in different forms from advice on the best products at the best price through to providing emotional support and guidance.

As Independent Financial Advisors (IFAs), we know that the value of seeking financial advice when it comes to your financial decisions is still under estimated. We also know that seeking professional advice is actually more important now than ever before: retirement planning, legislative changes and market uncertainty continue to make personal finances more and more complex.

In our last journal entry, we explained how and why psychometric testing is such an important part of our financial planning process. It remains a complex area and one that is often misunderstood, and in this article, we’re going to have a quick look at some of the pitfalls of using “in house” risk tolerance questionnaires and why we have chosen to use the FinaMetrica investment risk profiling tool.

Forecasting investment returns is like checking the weather. Guess what—you’re using a model. While models can be useful for gaining insights that can help us make good decisions, they are inherently incomplete simplifications of reality.

“The important thing about an investment philosophy is that you have one you can stick with.”

David Booth, Founder and Executive Chairman, Dimensional Fund Advisers

Investment success is a long-term endeavour. Indeed, people will spend decades pursuing their financial goals. But being an investor can be complicated, challenging, frustrating, and sometimes frightening. This is exactly why, as David Booth says, it’s important to have an investment philosophy you can stick with, one that can help you stay the course.

Being bombarded with data and headlines presented as impactful to your financial well-being can evoke strong emotional responses from even the most experienced investors. Having a strong relationship with an adviser could help you be better prepared to live your life through the ups and downs of the investment market.

Our experience since pension freedoms is that in almost every single case our clients underestimate how long they may live. We’re not entirely sure if our clients are particularly pessimistic or if this is a general trend. We suspect people simply don’t want to think about it!
