Interview of Alberto Cabezas – Executive Secretary of LA Referencia La Referencia is a network of repositories from 9 South American countries. How does it work and what are its aims? Share datasets in repositories provide to researchers a way for more transparency about their data used in published (or future) articles. This improves #reproducibility in scientific #research, which represent now a critical issue in research field. Repositories offers mainly DOIs in order to secure the datasets. #openresearch
Scientific Data works with over 60 public data repositories and helps authors find the best place to store their data. We require authors to store their data in community-recognized data-type-specific repositories when they exist. But for many data-types, specific repositories do not exist. In these cases, broad repositories, such as figshare, that can host a wide range of data-types provide a crucial service to the scientific community. (...) - ...

Applications include real-time translation and disease prediction. Europe needs to pursue a different strategy from Silicon Valley if it is going to reap the social and economic benefits of big data, according to Dirk Helbing, Professor of Computational Social Science at ETH Zurich, who aims to create an open, real-time data stream from the Internet of Things. The science #blogging platform +The Winnower  provides now DOIs for every blog posts. With DOIs, the posts of scientists are more close to articles since the platform already employs open #post -publication #peerreview - #openscience #openaccess
The value of blogs and bloggers in science is well recognized.  Blogs serve as an excellent form of post-publication peer review and host much of the scientific discussion that occurs on the web today.  Indeed, it is probably true that more interaction between scientists and between scientists and the public occurs away from traditional scientific articles themselves and in “alternative” forums such as Twitter, Facebook, and of course, blogs. (...

Anonymous #post-publication #peerreview is under threaten. PubPeer platform offers anonymous comment to scientific articles but a Michigan judge order to PubPeer to remove these feature after the lawsuit filed by an american cancer researcher (see our previous scoop http://sco.lt/5fWTDt). PubPeer aims is to fix the broken scientific peer review process but seems to loose the great opportunity to achieve this by anonymous discussion of research articles. Hope this will not discouraged online comments.
Site’s lawyers will appeal decision that would reveal IP address of commenter. The ongoing battle between PubPeer, a website that allows anonymous reviews of technical papers, and a researcher trying to unmask some of its users took a new turn yesterday when a county judge asked the site’s operators to hand over a piece of potentially identifying information.(...) - Science, by Kelly Servick, 20 March 2015

#scientificsocialnetworks provide #networking advantages to researchers in terms of collaboration, sharing, and #openaccess . With +Academia.edu
I have been a registered user of Academia.edu for several years now, and to be honest until recently I only used it from time to time, mostly as a place for green copies of my work. I did not see it as being a crucial part of my research workflow. Now this is slowly changing, and I am glad to say that it is a useful tool, which helps me a lot, especially in finding new, open access articles that are really interesting for me. But it seems to me t...

Citizen scientists call to help researchers to discover new compounds to cure diseases. #citizenscience   #openscience
Soil sample collection project designed to find new drugs explodes in popularity. Thousands of citizen scientists around the country are getting their hands dirty collecting soil samples after the Internet bestowed a recent burst of attention on a soil sampling project. The crowdsourced project, which aims to find new drugs by cultivating fungi from soil samples, drew only moderate interest since it began in 2010. But it caught a lucky break on s...

I was discussing something like this with a friend of mine years ago. He claimed people shouldn't be allowed access to his research because they might not understand it...

That was the day I lost faith in academia.

Neuroscience PhD - CEO & founder of Tree of Science (www.treeofscience.com), PhD in neuroscience with 10 years experience in research and academic teaching – Training, consulting, coaching in digital research tools and scientific networks (science 2.0), professional networking, open science, and digital strategy (personal branding and online reputation) for all researchers (from PhD students, academic PhDs to R&D researchers) and research organizations
Introduction

PhD in Neuroscience, I have developed and managed several basic research projects in the field of neuroscience (ion channels, cerebellum, epilepsy, pharmacology...). My experimental approaches were using electrophysiology, pharmacology, cellular-molecular biology, cell culture, biophysics, imaging... I have developed my own projects and also in collaboration with international teams, for instance within an European consortium of eight academic and private laboratories. My career of researcher in great laboratories (Ecole Normale Superieure, Institut Pasteur, Riken) give me the opportunity to get solid technical and theoretical experience and strong skills in projects management. I have been teaching in universities for 10 years

I have also co-founded Collectif PAPERA in 2008 in order to provide supports, advice and information to PhD students, PhDs and other casual workers in Higher Education and pubic research. I have than built an expertise in PhD programs, in Higher Education and Research at French and international level. I manage a community around this topic with meetings, conferences, news delivering through a website and social media.

My professional experiences (researcher, academic teacher, non-profit organization) give me the opportunity to realize that academic and R&D researchers need to enter in the new era of Research 2.0 to improve work efficiency, collaborative work skills, networking, personal branding, communication, online presence, professional mobility, and technology transfer.
I've founded Tree of Science, a company that offers advice, training, and coaching for all researchers (PhD students, academic PhDs, R&D researchers) to be the “Next scientists”. Consulting on digital research and strategy, open science and science crowdfunding is also providing to research organizations (academic and R&D laboratories). Training and coaching are delivered through an online platform (blended learning and social learning).

Let's work together to improve your scientific career!
