These two valiant ladies are walking the length of the California Coastal Trail to raise awareness: to complete the promise of the trail, formed by the 1972 vote which created the Coastal Commission to preserve public access to the coast.
They invite you to meet up with them for a day hike, join them for a beach cleanup, and/or follow the adventure on their blog.

Lace in the news
TORCHON, Honiton, Bucks Point and Bedfordshire. The names for different types of bobbin lace are as diverse as the people who take up lacemaking as a hobby. Jane Daniels is a tutor of this historic...

If you've put it off until today, and you're gritting your teeth, you have TurboTax to thank for making it all much harder than it needs to be. The IRS already has all the information it needs to check your return--why not just share that with you, let you check it, change it if necessary, and sign? Because TurboTax.
(Photo credit: 401 (K) 2013/Flickr) As Americans struggle through complex rules and messy paperwork to meet today's deadline for filing their income taxes, it might be somewhat comforting to know that making the whole arduous process simpler and more transparent has long been a goal of President Barack Obama as ...

What really cheesed me off of them was the time I had to obtain a very obscure form to do a minor calculation--something odd to do with AMT or stock sales, so not really that peculiar. After that hassle, I decided TTax was not worth the money, or the hassle of having to try to turn off those pointless, pointless videos that try to give friendly and superficial advice.

Hurray for ruminants!

The first goats ever booked for West Seattle work by SDOT are now on the job – Rent-A-Ruminant‘s goats are at work along the Delridge/Holden stairway: We first told you back on Friday about the plan for them to spend a few days tidying up the overgrowth that has created safety issues along this stairway, [...]

We are adding members to Google Groups (using Google Groups for Business) as email groups for users outside the domain (members of the organization, but not with domain accounts). We're using the "direct add" method, since in my experience, getting people to accept invitations is like pulling teeth, particularly when many members find computers daunting to begin with. I knew there was a limit of 100 per day, but I thought this was 100 per group. But we're running up against the limit, instead, per user adding. With 1200 or so members, and two of us doing the adding, this is going to take a while, even though we split up the list into smaller groups to avoid this problem. Does anyone know if it's possible to change that limit? It makes Groups hard to use for communication with large numbers of members.

It would be nice if they made Google+ the new Google Groups. The only thing they need to do is add a few things to G+ and it would function the same. Groups is lame in appearance but serves a good purpose for grouping permissions. Just a thought +Google+.

Precisely exposes the cynicism of the facile critique that the protesters drove fossil-fuel burning vehicles and used petroleum-based kayaks in their protest.
I remember thinking how ironic it was when Greenpeace started using gasoline-powered boats to block oil tankers, or when people drove to protests against oil drilling…” - Interior Secretary and former petroleum engineer Sally Jewell. “We all use oil…” - Western States Petroleum Association ...

Learning electronics with Piper, a #Minecraft toolbox for young inventors. We were blown away by this - it's really something! Their (very) successful Kickstarter has two weeks left to run.
At Raspberry Pi, we're interested in many of the different ways that computers and education converge. To hear more about a new approach, I've invited Mark Pavlyukovskyy to write about his project, Piper, which you can find on Kickstarter now. Here's Mark: I was a junior in college when I first ...
