Looks like Marvel will continue to double down on diversity in its comics. If this new Avengers line up is indeed the new status quo, we can only assume diversity is paying off for Marvel!

The CW's Flash remains pitch perfect even as it incorporates more and more of the Silver Age comic elements. Can they keep it up? I think the thing that makes this show work is the same thing that makes the Marvel Cinematic Universe work. The creators know the source material, but they aren't crippled by it.  They tweak the story to make it work for today's viewer. In this sense, they are exactly like the comic book writers of the Silver Age that took establish characters from the late 30s and 40s and re-imagined them in light of post WWII science and politics.

Introduction
 Julian C. Chambliss is an author, editor, and historian at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. His research and teaching interests focus on urban development and urban popular culture in the United States. His academic writing has appeared in the Florida Historical Quarterly, Pennsylvania History: A Journal of Mid-Atlantic Studies, Specs: A Journal of Arts & Culture, Studies in American Culture, Georgia Historical Quarterly, Journal of Urban History, and Ohio Valley History.  In addition, he has published opinion and commentary in popular forum such as the Los Angeles Times, The Orlando Sentinel, The Christian Science Monitor, and PopMatters.com.
