Hello all
From my LinkedIn profile:
"I am passionate about digital empowerment for ALL using flexible, innovative, blended learning methods (including making full use of mobile technologies and social media) to enhance life skills and improve employability.
I do not believe that age, gender, experience or level of formal education should be a barrier to new learning.
As a pro-active member of an online Personal Learning Network, I contribute to the sharing of knowledge, information and educational best practice on local, national and global stages. This network has provided a sustainable and enriching personal experience (both on and offline) which I believe has also considerably enhanced the quality of my own teaching and research.

I have been employed by University of Wales Trinity Saint David (@UWTSD) as a Tutor and Digital Skills Adviser on a flexible, full-time Level 4 Certificate in Higher Education Skills for the Workplace program - taught at a range of venues in the community over evenings and weekends - since October 2012.

A significant aspect of this role is to provide on-going, hands-on practical and emotional support and encouragement to the student cohorts - both face to face and online. The classes attract mainly mature students returning to learning after some time. These students require specialised support and teaching methods to build their confidence and help them acquire new skills to progress in the modern workplace.

I teach a Smart Technology in the Workplace module as part of a Skills for the Workplace course at HE Level 4 (1st year of a Bachelor's degree) and almost all of my students uses a smartphone but mostly for chat and messaging. I want to encourage them to use this mobile technology in two main scenarios. The first one is to communicate and collaborate with their peers on the course to assist with their learning journey. The second one is to effectively use mobile devices in their place of work - whatever that may be - and we will explore interesting and diverse ways of doing this. We have several small cohort groups of around 7-10 students based around South West Wales who meet evenings and weekends so they can continue to work full time whilst studying. All groups (usually 5-7) meet together a few times a year for joint activities but I am keen to promote more frequent online meet ups between the groups as well. One group and I have just begun using WhatsApp for simple communication and I am hoping to add other groups to this as a gentle testing the water starting activity soon. My reasons for being here are to learn from others about interesting ways of communicating and learning with my students that I haven't yet tried myself. We all get comfortable with certain apps or methods and can tend to use them exclusively whilst ignoring a lot of other good stuff - and I know I am quite guilty of that myself :-)
