Modern calculations show structures at Petra built by Nabataeans as astronomical tools to measure passage of time and important events. I’m going to Petra this spring so this is so fascinating to find out.

Vikings and other exciting diversions. The intrepid +Richard Lee on Waterstone’s blog, getting “historical fiction to the front of more UK shops”. Let’s help him get HF to the front of US shops also. This post introduces a range of excellent HF writers, including 2 favs of mine, +Patricia Bracewell  and +Helen Hollick. The great Bernard Cornwell stars, of course, since we’re talking Vikings.

Jason and the Argonauts sail again. Or at least the Argo does. A ship constructed of ancient materials and methods and conforming to the mythic description of the Argo is harboring in the Greek port city of Volos. Sounds like a fun way to travel, but I want good food more than a golden fleece on my trip. Can we have a great chef on board when we sail? Who’s joining me?

As if Egypt didn’t have enough troubles. To “prove” their alien invader theory, 2 Germans vandalized the Great Pyramid at Giza. Apparently they bought their way into areas restricted to archaeologists and cut away samples.

Apollo lost & found in Gaza. A Palestinian fisherman displayed a gorgeous bronze, that rarest of extant Greek statue materials, on, of all things, a towel emblazoned with smurfs. Palestinian authorities have spirited statue away w/ no explanation. Archaeologists groan. Oh, & fisherman chopped off fingers to figure out if they had gold. How low the god of music and medicine has sunk!
