Baba Thakur Singh Ji

What is a Saint?

A jewel in disguise.
A prince in peasant's garbs.
An immortal life in dying flesh.
An ambassador of the Eternal King, detained on foreign soil.
A monarch at the foot of the throne, waiting for his crown.
A royal slave in a prison of clay, preparing for a mansion.
A traveller on a rocky road, bound for the streets of gold.
A watchman of the midnight hills, to greet the everlasting Day.
A diamond in the rough, being polished to shine as the stars.
A nugget of gold in the crucible, to be refined from its dross.
A pearl in the oyster, to be delivered from the body of flesh.
A lamp in a dark, dark night, soon to blaze forth with everlasting light.
A stranger in the midst of enemies, hurrying on to live in everlasting fellowship.
A flower in a garden of briars, soon to unfold its petals where the Rose of Sharon blooms.

'Immortal' - Portland Limestone

Managed to get this thing out of my car - destroyed a wheelbarrow in the process.

Didn't expect to bring much back last week from Portland I just had an idea to start to carve an old greek looking bust to get an understanding of the tools and finding form etc. But even with a couple bits to finish this is one of my favorite pieces of the year mainly because of how it emerged out of the stone. I always thought it sounded cliché when sculptors talk about how figures are locked in stone and the task is really to find ways to bring it out but I know what they mean to an extent. Even if you look at his left eye in this one, there's a faint outline of an iris - that isn't drawn on, it's a fossil that just happens to encircle it when lit from certain angles. The original weathered looking block was apparently quarried over 200 years ago in Portland, which is a stone that much of London is built from - St Paul's Cathedral was made from this stuff around that time. Beyond that it has a history going back over 150 million years in it's formation; there's few other mediums in art that give you an appreciation of the working material like this.

Credit again to Hannah Sofaer for helping me on it and Portland Sculpture & Quarry Trust. Like I said...I'll be back :) #Sculpture #Portland #Stonecarving #stonemasonry #stonecraft #art #Greek #assyrian #egyptian #psqt
