Got something very interesting in the mail yesterday. The Remix Mini by Jide. Since there has been a lot of talk recently about a Chrome OS/Android merger and Android on the desktop, I thought I would mention this third party attempt here.

For those who aren't familiar , the Remix mini is a $40 mini desktop computer running a version of Android designed for the desktop. The company behind it, Jide, was founded by former Google employees.

The device itself is about the size of a Raspberry Pi with a case on it. It has a quad core A53 ARM processor, 16 GB of storage, and 2 GB of RAM.

I've only had a few hours to play with it, but I'm very impressed. Performance is very good for the price, I would say it is very comparable to some of the ARM powered Chromebooks. It can run the Android Microsoft Office suite and Chrome browser in resizable windows. It has a desktop where files can be manipulated, and a full file explorer. It seems to be compatible with most Android apps, most of which can be resized. Some (like intensive games) have to be ran fullscreen.

My concern with this originally was that it would be cludgy like most mult-window Android solutions have been. I couldn't have been more wrong. This is something very polished, enough to be something that could have originated with Google itself. The desktop interface is very Chrome OS like. Not quite as smooth, but again this is still very beta. I'd love to try a laptop running this for a more accurate comparison to my Chromebook.

I'm impressed and very happy that I backed this project on Kickstarter. This certainly seems like it is going to go places.
