Good morning... Farewell

Sunrise at New Zealand's Farewell Spit. Gorgeous color, great reflection off the still water of the receding tide.

Approximately 8 million viewers tuned in on +YouTube to watch Felix Baumgartner's stunning  #spacejump , when the man reached 833.9mph during freefall. If the number is confirmed, YouTube will have broken its last livestream record by a factor of 16 (previous record: the London 2012 Olympic Games).

This is the future of live events. When something is allowed to broadcast free of geographic restrictions and artificial tape delays, the audience goes global. When traditional media is allowed to converge with social networks, anything can become a shared moment.

Great job Felix & #RedBullStratos ! And +YouTube, for inexplicably handling such a huge number of concurrent streams without imploding.

Edit: The number has just been confirmed by YouTube - 8 million concurrent livestreams. Link: http://youtube-global.blogspot.ca/2012/10/mission-complete-red-bull-stratos-lands.html

This is a pretty sweet idea. I'd imagine that even with a decent amount of image degradation it would still acceptable (and still contribute to better immersion) since it is observed primarily in your peripheral vision.

Now, imagine if there were an ambitious and decently funded space program... I wonder if that might inspire the pursuit of education in scientific fields.

Having just quit that field due to the fact that there is no funding, I aggree. The bigger problem is that we have lost most of the talent (and knowledge in the field) due to retirement and laying off the next generation. If we really wanted to develop something new, we will be reinventing the wheel. Furthermore this also applies to missle defense. Would it not be cool to shoot down a missle from korea or iran? (yes, they will eventually develope one) Good luck the Obamanation cancelled those programs. Every empire in history has eventually fallen. We are trying hard to end ours through enabling the lazy and punishing the intellegent.

Textbooks on mobile = good, textbooks on iPad = bad

Do we really need our schools to start issuing text books on a proprietary platform? No, we don't need that. We don't want that. It makes no sense at all.

You want non-paper books? Great. You want multimedia integrated into your textbooks? Fantastic. You want to tie your school to iOS and force your students to purchase an iPad in order to take advantage of the new features and benefits in your textbooks? No way.

Instead, what we need is an open, potentially even web based system. My friend +Philip Berne suggested that just a short while ago on Twitter. It makes sense. HTML5 can do a lot of great things, including multimedia. It also has the benefit of working on many devices. I can see issues with managing subscriptions and purchases, though, since anything on the web is up for grabs. Even without web-based solutions, there are other formats, like EPUB and PDF/A, that could be used safely on many different platforms.

If a child has access to but a single device on most any computing platform (PC, Mac, tablet, smartphone, etc) then he or she would have access to the books needed. With all the fancy additional features not found on paper.

And it would still work on an iPad.

The last thing we want to do is latch onto a single hardware platform for our school books, especially when that platform is far from the most affordable. Android powered tablets and simple netbook computers can be had for far less than an Apple iPad.

Access is what's important, not riding the wave of Apple's amazing success with the iPad.

Lupins at Lake Tekapo

This was shot on a windy and crowded day near the Church of the Good Shepard at Lake Tekapo, NZ. I got low to compose the shot (and block out other tourists). The multi-colored lupins and the brilliant aqua color of the lake made for an amazing scene.
