How to Disable "What's Hot" on your timeline

There has been a recent wave of racist posts about Baltimore, including one linking to an ugly article and saying, in the post, that it is "open season on [highly offensive term for African-Americans]".  Maybe Google has a team to manually review these threats and call the police, but, in the mean time, Google+ algorithms have been putting these posts on my feed repeatedly because they are "Hot on Google+"  I thought I might have to leave this social network.

Turns out that you can disable "What's Hot" on your timeline entirely.  I've attached a cropped screen capture.  Full instructions are at https://support.google.com/plus/answer/1686118

I've read all three, actually.  I was into overrated fantasy fiction for a while, and I've also read The Hobbit.

Some years ago, I decided to take on a project in which I would buy nothing new for a year, other than food and personal care products. If I wanted something, I had to either find it used or do without.

I got into dumpster-diving — kind of as a tourist, I must admit. I wasn't homeless. I can't possibly recount all the stories, but here are a few.

- I found about a dozen bags of prepackaged salad mix, still chilled from the refrigerator, with an expiration date of that day. I took them all, and gave away the ones I didn't think I could eat before they rotted. I did explain that I got them from the trash, but that gave me a moment to articulate why I thought that was insignificant.

- I still have several pieces of furniture I got from dumpsters, including a desk chair and a side table. Someone had taken the effort to lift them and throw them into a dumpster rather than find someone who could use them.

- I have an engineer friend who is into dumpster diving. He has found powerful rare earth magnets in empty dumpsters, because they had clung to the inside of the bins. He also found a cache of large silver-oxide batteries behind an industrial park. Not only are these highly toxic and illegal to put into the waste stream, but he, for fun, extracted the silver and made several hundred dollars selling it to a precious metals dealer.

- I found a wedding album (!!) next to the owner's manual and maintenance log of a Toyota in a dumpster behind an apartment complex. I knew it was a high-crime area, and I imagined that a Toyota had been ransacked, and these items had been thrown away by the thieves as "worthless". I wrote a note explaining where I had found them, and dropped the batch through the mail slot of the apartment management office. I hope the Toyota owner got his wedding album back.

- And then there was the day I found a girl's school backpack. It was pink, in good shape, and had a name on it. I looked inside, and there were still school papers, so it was unlikely to have been intentionally discarded. Groan. What was I supposed to do? I didn't want to play detective and try to find the parents' contact info: that felt invasive. I didn't want to take it to a police station: what if something had happened to the girl? Then it hit me: two doors down was a public library! I went in, approached a librarian, and said "Hi, I found this backpack out back, and I think someone might be looking for it. May I give this to you?" The librarian was overjoyed to help. I really hope the girl was OK and was reunited with her bag.

My "Buy Nothing New Year" was simultaneously the most frustrating and the most enlightening year of my life. I cannot recommend this project strongly enough to anyone reading this post.

The dust jacket for The Stand should bear a quote from Stephen King that says "I know it's long, but your mom didn't complain."

On a hot summer day in California, I was shopping at a Rite Aid pharmacy.  A woman entered the little vestibule that serves as an airlock for the air conditioning, tied her little yappy dog to a sign, and went to the store's ice cream counter.  She asked for half a scoop of vanilla ice cream in a wafer cone, paid, and proceeded to carry it to her annoying little dog as a treat.

A fellow customer asked "Did ... did you just ... buy an ice cream cone for YOUR DOG?"

The woman held up the cone defensively and cried in indignation "Not a WHOLE scoop!"  As if it were the size of the scoop that was the issue, not the fact that she did it at all.

It's been years, and that's always the image that pops into my head when a conservative politician gets called out on their bigotry — the politicians who think it's the scale of a moral injustice rather than the nature of a moral injustice that makes it unjust.  I just picture them holding up a melting ice cream cone and crying, indignantly, "I don't want to deny ALL rights to ALL people ALL the time!  I just want to deny SOME rights to SOME people SOME of the time!"

Maybe #NRA members just have so much hearing loss from playing with automatic rifles that when Wayne LaPierre says "Hillary Rodham Clinton will bring a permanent darkness of deceit and despair, forced upon the American people to endure", what they think they hear is "We are simply an organization devoted to teaching Americans about gun safety and their Second Amendment rights."
NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre dedicated his speech today at the group’s annual meeting in Nashville, Tennessee, to attacking Hillary Clinton, at one point even resorting to listing

Navel oranges, Red Delicious apples, and many seedless fruits are the result of freak mutations in nature that were painstakingly preserved and propagated because of their desirable characteristics.

Modern cultivars of wheat, maize, bananas, all cruciferous vegetables, and most other crops were the result of low-tech genetic engineering through artificial selection and hybridization to create appealing (and patentable) varieties.

Golden Promise barley, now considered a classic and prized varietal for making beer and whisky, was born from a batch of seeds that were placed next to a nuclear reactor to encourage mutations.

But according to — I'll be blunt here — scientifically-illiterate people, high-tech engineering at the genomic level results, by definition, in "Frankenfoods" that are likely to kill you.

Because somehow, I guess, the genome knows whether a genetic change was random, low-tech, or high-tech — and if it was high-tech, uses it for evil.

I asked my sixth-grade son if he thought Doctor Who came from Whoville.  He got as far as "No, I don't think so, because…" before he realized I was joking.

I am proud to note, however, that he was very patient and thoughtful as he began to explain why my hypothesis was unlikely.
