The definition of role play changes each decade or sooner . I started with an early version of Zorg, went heavy in Wizardry series. The day when you kept a notebook and graph paper at your side to have your adventure. Moving forward to 1000s of hours in Baulders Gate series, notes required, but graph paper was no longer needed.
Then comes ES , much easier role , maybe a few notes needed, a lot less reading involved. This continued thru Oblivion, with only very little notes, but to maximize your skills / talents ,a well layed out plan was necessary. Oblivion was the last game I ever needed a notebook for in gaming.
The days of D&D , the simple roll of a dice , a randomly generated multiplier are still there, but very very complex equations and algorithms have replaced this simple method.
