Lightroom Q&A  -

Just started using lightroom on my laptop.  I'm wondering what most folks do with their photos.  I want to keep my photos on an external drive (so they don't take up a bunch of space on my hard drive on my laptop).  Do you keep the catalog on the local hard drive and just import the photos to the external drive... or do you keep the catalog and the photos on the external drive?

MIght be a bit late, but anyways:
All pictures are on my NAS, I mostly work from my desktop. My catalog is saved in the Dropbox. previews and smart previews are not synchronized, since they may take up a lot of space.
On the road I can work with all my pictures on my laptop, using the smart previews I created when I was home.
With this method it is important to only use one instance of lightroom, or there might be a conflict uploading the catalog.

Another jet streaking by us at sunset last night on the way back home to Phoenix.  You can just barely see the tail from the other jet as it's about to pass the wing.

It is sometimes hard to catch the cool moments that go by outside the window. Good catch with this one! Nice colors captured, too.

We live in the future.

The Internet of Things is coming

This is why I love Silicon Valley. I've given dozens of speeches about our book, "Age of Context," and only after speaking at PARC (Palo Alto Research Center, which is where Steve Jobs got the ideas for the original Macintosh) did a guy come up to me with a fist full of new small computers.

These things don't just have their own ARM processor on them, but a radio and some memory as well, along with a couple of sensors. They are coming in 2014 to enable new kinds of "things." What kinds of things? Well, your shirt might have a computer built into it in the future.

"What about battery?" I asked.

Jeremy Walker, CEO of Iota (these are his hands and his computers) says that they already have the ability to generate power by movement or through solar (the generator would be on a separate chip).

What was really mind blowing is that after he showed me these, he said "and here's our prototypes coming in 2015." Another hand, but these computers were less than half the size of the ones in the photo below.

http://www.iotacomputing.com/ has more on this interesting new startup.

On a trip to Lansing from Phoenix I had to go in to the urgent care for an ear infection. The staff was very friendly, my wait time was very short, and I was seen by a Dr. with in 10 minutes of filling out my forms. Additionally the facility was very clean and it felt like a safe place. My trip to the urgent care was at 11:30am on a Friday.
